  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What next ?

OK I would like to move away from the rather heated discussion of pro/anti war positions that have dominated in this conflict and just ask a question.

How do you think the Iraqi state would function after this war? Does liberation mean a change of mindset?
Can democracy as we see it in the West really survive in a land where theocracy and diverse forms of Islam ?
Could such a democratic state really exist in a land locked country surrounded by other Islamic countries?
What would we do if another Saddam (or worse) came to power?
Do you think the coalition will still be seen as allies once the new government comes in?
If democracy does not work there, is it God's will?
Is democracy working in Afghanistan?

Just some thoughts that I had on the way home from work..God bless...and goodnight!!

Dave

There will be a militarily administered govenrment in place until we can get a friendly civilian government to take over

Does liberation mean a change of mindset?

Doubtfull, it will take a few generations for the mindset to change.

Can democracy as we see it in the West really survive in a land where theocracy and diverse forms of Islam ?

Doubtfull, as a matter of fact we will have to keep a close eye on the nation to insure that people of Iraq do not vote in some sort of Theocracy.

Could such a democratic state really exist in a land locked country surrounded by other Islamic countries?

With enough Military support anything is possible I guess.

What would we do if another Saddam (or worse) came to power?

We'd be obliged to go in and take him out also.

Do you think the coalition will still be seen as allies once the new government comes in?

There will be some who see us as allies and others who see us as invaders, I doubt we will ever win over all thier hearts and minds.

If democracy does not work there, is it God's will?

I doubt it.

Is democracy working in Afghanistan?

Not really.

A post Hussein Iraqi government does not seem to be only a source of divisive conversation in the Middle East but it also seems to have caused major differences of opinion between Donald Rumsfeld and Colin Powell, and on the surface between Tony Blair and George Bush.

Just prior to and since the invasion one of the propoganda moves the secular and sometimes liberal Sunni Muslim that is Hussein, has started to rally the Islamic surrounding nations, even its worst enemy Iran is decrying the USA and Britain.

I really pray something positive does come out of this war, but I can't help but think we have another Israel-type post-war conflict on our hands.
