The word (sabbath) means rest or cease. Under the old covenant there were many sabbaths. If a day was special God world pronounce a sabbath for that day. The ceasing from labor is not what made the day special, the day was special so God commanded there be a sabbath to show the significance of that day. It's up to us to study and understand why a particular day was called a sabbath. If the day was called a sabbath as a result of it having a shadow quality to be used by God to teach a lesson of how He was going to deal with sin then that sabbath would only serve up until what it taught was accomplished ie the ministry of Jesus. If a day was called a sabbath because of its memorial quality of something of the past that we need to remembered then that Sabbath is eternal.
The seventh day of creation is part of time itself. It was a day created, blessed and sanctified by God. It was protected by Law in which anyone who violated it by not placing value on it's meaning by ceasing labor on that day that person would suffer the death penalty under the Law. This was not so with the shadows. The seventh day of creation is Saturday, the seventh day of the week.
Dictionary: Sat-ur-day; The seventh day of the week. The day of the week between Friday and Sunday.
Under the new covenant the death penalty has been lifted so we are no longer motivated by fear to place value on the seventh day, but rather, we place value on the seventh day because we have been born again and are now alive to God. As children of God, we place value on things that He places value on. We love and honor what He loves and honors. That's what identifies us as children of God. We see the seventh day has a blessed and sanctified day in the eyes of God so we see it the same way. We love and celebrate the seventh day because we love God who made it for us. This is the kind of relationship God desires with His children He has no passion for a relationship based on fear.
