  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

First tell me what Lord Of The Rings CHARACTER you would marry, and your reasson why.

THEN you can tell me which one of the Lord Of The Rings ACTORS you would marry and why.

I would marry the character Eomer because he's such a determined person, and skilled warrior.

I'd marry Sean Bean because he just sweeps me off my feet, and he's an awesome actor in all his movies.

Character: Arwin. She's fair, wise, and knows what she wants, even if it means death.

Actress: Hard to say. They're all so liberal. If it was on account of beauty, however, I'd probably choose Sam's wife at the end. I'm a sucker for a red-head.

I would probably marry Elladan, cause he's awesome. I'm not sure exactly why I would choose him, I think it's because he's an Elf and he's Elrond's son and he's cool. Again, don't ask me why, but it would have to be Elladan, not Elrohir. :)

Actor: I dunno. Maybe Christopher Lee because he's just so charming...just kidding! Mabye Billy Boyd because i just love his accent ;)

ARWEN. An E. Criminal! ;)

Me, I'd choose Lüthien. Though that's from Silmarillion. I'd choose her for the amount of love she held for Beren, and I'd choose her for her voice, looks and much more importantly, wisdom and probably knowledge as she was bound to be quite old.

Actress; Nope. Not my thing to even look twice at an actress. I don't like fame that well.

For me, it would be Faramir. But it would be the Faramir that we saw in the books and not the movies. In the books, he did not waver like they had him do in the movies.

Vigo Mortenson would be my choice from the actors, partly because he is such a passionate actor, and really poured himself into the role of Aragorn.

Character: Galadriel. I initially considered Arwen, but then realized Galadriel isn't going to age either, and she's a bit more powerful than Arwen.

Actress: Liv Tyler. :p For obvious reasons. Plus the fact that her dad's old and rich, so the money's going somewhere.

(Wow, thinking with my wallet and my- Er... ** whistle and walks off **)

In the novel aspect - I would go for Faramir; he's sort of stalwart and unbending but wise and blah blah...lol. The book's description of him is of a good looking fellow, too.

In real life...I don't think I'd want to get married. Viggo has a lot of appealing aspects though, so in a "realistic" approach, I'd probably get along with him better than the other members of the cast. He'd have to twist my arm though, to get me to commit. *lol

There's something that strikes me as sad that you all seem to be so quick to engage in this sort of conversation. When considering the characters of LotR, I find I cannot be so quick to answer this question, and am even at a loss for an answer. I find that you cannot really relate to the heroes any more than you can relate to Christ during his temptation in the desert. This sort of question ignores the nobility of the heroes at best, and denies or insults it at worst. We are not meant to relate to Aragorn or Arwen. I couldn't imagine marrying either one of them, although I suppose I would consider my bride to be my very own Luthien, in an archetypical sense. We aren't meant to relate to Frodo, Gandalf, Elrond, or even Faramir and Boromir, although they come closer to our world than the more noble characters. If we can relate to anyone, it would be Sam and similar servants. But even Sam is greater than any of us could hope to be. If I had to choose a character to marry, I would choose someone more like Rose Cotton. She and Sam are probably the best heroes for us to relate to, although as I said, they are still a level above us. I'll let Tolkien make my point for me:

"I think the simple 'rustic' love of Sam and his Rosie (nowhere elaborated) is absolutely essential to the study of his (the chief hero's) character, and to the theme of the relation of ordinary life (breathing, eating, working, begetting) and quests, sacrifice, causes, and the 'longing for Elves', and sheer beauty."

Considering the actors who play the characters is even worse. The films have successfully bled Tolkien's work of nobility, antiquity, and so many other things. Orlando Bloom is no more Legolas than a kid who dresses up like an elf for a costume party. And I could go on and on... you might as well ask which Christ-playing actor we would marry.

Dude..

You're thinking about this way too much.

Some things ought to be taken seriously. Fairy stories are one of them.

Edit: And I never thought I'd be criticized for thinking. ;)

It's fiction. It's not that serious.

And besides, I'm not criticizing you for thinking, I'm just joking.

Tell that to the author. But even if it's just fiction, why shouldn't we take it seriously? Why shouldn't we worry about how quickly we would say, "I'd like to marry that guy from this book." The arts are very important. I believe it was Dostoyevsky who said that first art will imitate life, then life will imitate art, and then finally, life will draw the very reason for its existence from the arts.

And besides, I'm not criticizing you for thinking, I'm just joking.

I know, so was I.
