  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

ok I am currently focused on going to YWAM either jan. 9th or sept 26 depending on funds. But then it hit me... I really don't know that much about YWAM. and I asked certain questions to the recruiters but did not get the answer I was looking for and thought I would post my question on here if that is ok with everyone. I know I am called to missions full time. So then I ran into YWAM's dts and sofm program. SO I was very interested in the training and internship.... but then it hit me. what then afterwards? I mean.. my focus is lost souls to see God's amazing Love. but does anyone here know much about YWAM? I know it will give me a great foundation since I hear it is a good program. But should I go through YWAM or will I need to go to seminar instead? I know they have some offers after you complete the course. what are those like? does anyone know? will I need to come up for the funds for the offer after the course or... well. This I am sure is a very confusing question I am giving since I am sure many of you do not know about YWAM. But thanks for reading this far. :) God bless!!!

Firstly, I would suggest hitting their website. Look at "About YWAM" or an FAQ page. See if they have forums on their website as well.

YWAM is very established. And more and more you don't need a seminary degree to go overseas. And this is a positive trend in some respects. (Though you can't really ever study the Bible too much, seminary has proven to set people up for failure in certain cross-cultural instances) They are the only missions training outfit I know of that has an art program as well--art being what I have a degree in.

I can't tel if you looking to go on a short-term trip or become a student at a DTS by your post. But a very, very great place to start feeding your missions interest is a semster long class called Perspectives on the World Christian Movement (www.perspectives.org). This class will "ruin" your life (though you seem to be headed in that direction already!).

I have no personal knowledge of YWAM, but have little reservation promoting what I know of them. The DTS will get you Bible knowledge and "real-life" training, as some other programs have done for years also. But if you can take Perspectives first I think you'd be better prepared for that longer commitment.

And one last thing. www.svm2.net is advocating at least a 2 year short-term mission trip, and with good reasons. One being, you'll begin to learn the language, adjust to the culture and get past the "honeymoon period," and two that you'll actually see fruit from your service.

well... I am signed up for the dts for jan 9. But looking at funds... unless God has different plans, I might not go untill sept 26. I know I want to go full time missions, I know this is what God has led me to go into. Except... I also do not want to count on individuals to pay for my trips but rather the church itself... or through an organization. I feel lead to do full time missions through open doors ministry or to countries that hate Christianity.

YWAM I have heard will ruin my life also. I guess what i am wondering... without going to the YWAM site itself... is then what? What will I do or be able to do after YWAM. I have an understanding that schooling (in the wrong sense) can do more damage than good. But I never want to water down the importance of study. I read the bible almost everyday and now just bumped it up to reading 9 chapters a day. 6 chapters of old testimant so that I am familiar with it. Proverbs a day for wisdom. and 3 chapters a day of New testimant for devotions. I do not say that for pride or anything like that, but just to emphasize how important I see study is.

I guess I just want to pursue the future of missions, God's way and with wisdom and not zeal. I am very passionate about this... but I do not want to go about it the wrong way. Thank you soo much for your insight.. I will check out those sites soon as I have a chance!!! but I hope I gave you a better understanding of where I am comming from!!! God bless :) thanks again :)

I can say that YWAM will not ruin your life... I have almost grown up in it and my life is not ruined!
Another thing YWAM is part of a worldwide University the "University of the Nations" it is recognized and is accreditted in most countries. You would be able to get any kind of degree in many spheres and areas, with a wide range of schools/courses/seminars that you could take to get your cerdits for a degree.
So yeah... Just to say again for good measure, YWAM will not ruin your life.

WOW!!!! I thank God for all your love in supporting my questions! Thank you thank you thank you very much! lol. I didnt' mean YWAM would ruin my life in a bad way. lol. I meant that I heard YWAM would ruin my normal conception of Christianity and following Christ, in that I have heard it will definatly take me out of my comfort zone and push me to a deeper level in Christ. lol. Sorry for wording it wrong the first time.

what kind of bad experiences did your friends have with YWAM? I am looking to work with OPEN DOORS ministry where if I get caught with one bible I will be put to prison for decades... or decade just for mentioning I am a Christian. SO I am not sure if I am very worried with having a bad experience with YWAM but I sure would love to hear about the experiences you encountered!

lambslove, ROXA, Ajuran, and elelohe, thanks for your inputs. Reply back, I value them in my decision with YWAM.

I figured YWAM would put a good start on my missions work... and then I heard of opportunities to work with them afterwards. But I was not sure if I need to come up with funds to work with them afterward, or if it is a job and I get paid for it.... or what. As for the university itself, I am not sure... I am all ready trying to save up 14000 dollars just for the internship DTS and sofm alone.

by bad experiences, I mean that they were did not end up doing what they were trained to do--reach the lost. Becky ended up cleaning bedrooms in a youth hostel and never getting to participate in any of the children's ministry work, and James ended up teaching English to rich children of Exxon executives. Both positions earned money which YWAM confiscated as soon as they were paid. They weren't bad experiences because they were dangerous, they were bad experiences because they weren't involved in evangelism.

ok i will try it one more time - this time without chating on other sites. ;)

i don´t know what i wrote the first time, just that it was good, toke me a while and was lost, but anyway - i´ll start all over again.

i´ve always known that god called me into mission - and since 4 years i know that god wants me to go to somalia. since i´m 13 i have been to a local kings kids (youth work from ywam) group and to some training camps at the local base. when i was about 15, all my friends - including me - sayd they would go to ywam and make a dts. but then i learned so much about discipleship that i thought i would´nt need it.

last summer i finished my 3 year internship at a goverment office, where i was trained to be a commercial clerk. i had already arranged with a mission office in south africa that i would help them with administrative duties beginning in january 04. then i thought about how i can fill the gap, and asked the ywam base - where i´ve been often before - if i can work for them. so i worked for 3 months as the secretary from the base leader. during this time god spoke again to me about joining ywam. and so i planned to do a dts and sofm after the year in south africa.

when i´ve been in south africa i did some serious mistakes and i had to go back home in may. i was devasteted. it was my dream to go to africa since i can remember and lost everything. the base leader asked me to work for them insteed. but i couldn´t. i knew i had to get right before i could even think of going to mission again. so i tried to find a normal job - but god hasn´t given me any. and by now i know that there is always a second chance and god still wants me to go. next year i´m doing my senior high school certificate and than - ...i dont know. (but possible will join ywam, cause i just can´t hide from god - i´m not even interested in a normal job anymore. ;))

ywam is good, it´s one of the best orgas when it comes to frontier mission and pioneering. when it comes to reach the liturally ends of the earth. but the office i worked for was good as well and out of church context. and god didn´t tell us to build mission centers but to build church. so i´m wondering about that point.

ywam has no paid jobs - even the founder loren cunningham lives on funds. you have to get people behind you, who will support you for years. but it works, god really serves the financial needs of the people who trust him. ask someone who is into ywam for a long time - they all can tell you testimonies.

you don´t have to go to training - but like someone mentioned before ywam has a whole university, where you can study, whatever your interest. and the '"normal" bible collegues don´t really prepare for frontier mission.

as there is a university and people with all different experiences, interests and knowledge join ywam, there are thousand of possibilities what you can do. ywam works into almost every area and aspect of life you can think of, so thats really about where you are talented. of course its same like in any other company or orga - you wont become f.e. a base leader right after finishing your dts.

so i hope that answered your questions - and mayby we will be working together one day. be blessed and rellay on him!

:) thank you so much. you sort of answered my questions. I am not being very specific though.. I am sorry.

Umm... let me think of how I can put it. I know I am called to work with persecuted countries. Probably with open doors ministries. More likely long term. I am not really looking to get paid to do it. I realize it is all funded. I know I am called to persecuted countries.

actually I probably am going to have to talk to a missionary about this. I really am not too sure what I want to ask.

I guess I know I need to start on missions. Except I cant very well stay for too long at my house anymore, as my family is not saved and I can't burden them any longer. I am not burdening them really, it is just hard to explain my heart for missions for life. They want me to be a loan officer or something that makes lots of money. I did loan officing for a couple of weeks. But I can't do that forever. I am also doing security... my other passion besides evangelism. I know one doesn't really need to be or go through training to be a missionary because I know some who havn't. then again they are very committed and dedicated Christians who devote their free time in study.

I guess what I am really looking for is... well internships. I guess that is my question. are their evangelists or missionaries out their that take assistants? actually I am not even sure if that is what I need. So far YWAM dts and sofm is what is stickin in my mind so far. I mostly want to do it for training purposes. I am not so concerned with the actual ministrie although I feel privelaged that while I am training with them they will be using me.

I suppose what I am really thinkin is, certain ministries that are hiring are looking for those with schooling. And I am wondering if YWAM dts and sofm counts for anything. Or will I pretty much have to continually seek funding. Actually I need to talk to a missionary perhaps or one who has been on missions because it feels like I am making my questions even more confusing than before. Thanks for reading this far though :)

keith green, a prophet whos heard was really after god and who was involved into mission sayd: 90% are actually called into mission. but only about 1% are going. so you should rather know, that you are not called to go - then searching for an answer if you´re called to go. i believe thats right.

The Mercy Ships grew out of YWAM, and seperated last year. It's a fleet of ships that go to the neediest of countries and provide relief to the people there. We restore sight to the blind, prosthetics to the limbless, remove facial tumors, fix cleft lips, build houses & schools, dig wells, provide dental care, health care, community development, and even manage to tell people about Jesus & His undying love. Check them out here,...http://mercyships.org
For a glimpse of how I spent the last month in the DomRep, working with the Haitians there, check out my website, http://ericthibodeau.com/things_what_be_happening_today,___.htm

Hello there,
In response to your question. YWAM is an established missions para- organization that has bases all over the world. I did my DTS back in 2000 and have been serving on Board the Mercy Ship Anastasis in West Africa for the past 3 and a half years. I have no regrets as this is what God has called me to and I know I will be involved in missions for the rest of my life.

If you do a YWAM DTS you will have the world open up to you for missions. You can go where God is leading you but you will have to raise your own support.

As far as not proclaiming the gospel as someone on here said in a earlier post... well I stongly disagree.
How about tens of thousands of people hearing the good news in Sierra Leone in just 8 months and that does not include the times before. How about scores of churches being planted in villages that never had a church or a Christian before! This just in the last two years.
YWAM is very much into proclaiming and into demonstrating the love of God in all ways. You must do both.

Your mission experience will only reflect how passionate and zealous you are. YWAM sure will not smother any zeal you have. But if you don't have it to begin with then why go. Huh? :) So, if you want to serve God overseas and feel called to do so then YWAM is one organization that is good to consider.

YWAM is a good organization. Different Bases may have different strengths and weaknesses but you can go with God and turn the world upside down no matter what. You be fired up and you will fire up others!!

All Mission organizations wil have it's critics.. but you need to Go where you think God is leading.

God Bless you

I was in YWAM for a number of years. DTS is awesome. You do need to pay for it yourself, and if you join as a staff member people need to sponser you. It's not as difficult as it sounds. It is a good test if that is where God wants you to be. There is a saying that goes 'where God guides, he provides'.
