  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What is your favorite version of the Bible, and why?

I would like to find a good english translation of the syriac Pe$hitta. I have the George Lamsa translation but it seems strangly like the KJV without the thees and thous. I'm not sure how great of a translation it is.

Good news!

We might not have to wait too long. This has been a project of the Leiden University, I think for decades. There seems to be recent news...

(the above link will not work as it is. you have to replace the "$" with an "s")

Be sure to notice the "introduction" at the bottom of the page.

My Bible studies took off to new heights when my eyes were opened to the value of the Old Testament canons of the various Orthodox traditions. Then, when I realized the central importance of the Septuagint that laid down another layer of richness. Can't wait to delve into the Pe$hitta too! Though perhaps the only satisfying way will be to become acquainted with ancient Syriac.

It grieves me sometimes when I think how central the Bible is to my Protestant brethren yet so many have permanently closed the door on this type of investigation. It adds so much color and richness the heart soars.
