  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What is your favorite version of the Bible, and why?

I am extremely biased towards the Divine perspective of scripture and I will advocate that people read the bible as the Word of God and not the word of men.

I like how in Colossians 2 Paul calls all the "taste not, touch not, handle not" commandments of the OT "commandments of men"

perhaps this whole new covenant is about something else altogether?

How bout this: read em all.. enjoy the meat and spit out the bones!
:D

Good idea for anyone who is able to apply critical thinking. But, before you can think critically about various interpretations of Scripture, one needs a basic familiarity with the text itself.

[quoteI say this because God is so amazing in that He can even take 'bad' commentary
just as He can take secular ideas, and use them as a means to HIS ends.

I agree.

For more accuracy, I would prefer the NKJV [or YoungLT].
Sorry if I wasn't clear :sorry:

Edit to add:tho I wish the NKJV would have used the ye's, thou's, thine, etc...since it would show the singular and plural of words better me thinks.
Note here what Jesus tells the High Priest concerning His coming.
He uses the singular "thou" then uses the plural "ye", not just referring to the HP but all of them. Pretty interesting verse :)

Search for 'Genesis 1:1' in the version

T-R] Matt 26:64 Jesus is saying to him "thou say, moreover I am saying to ye, from present/now ye shall be seeing the Son of the Man sitting out of rights of the power and coming upon the clouds of the heaven".
[Reve 1:7/6:16]

KJV) Matthew 26:64 Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.

The NASB is even worst in my humble view, as it uses the singular word for all 3

NASB) Matthew 26:64 Jesus said to him, "You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, hereafter you will see THE SON OF MAN SITTING AT THE RIGHT HAND OF POWER, and COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN."

I understand. However, I recommend them because I believe the notes are good and serve to instruct a new believer in Godlieness.

Although, now I do recall your earlier mention of "babes" and in that case,
eating the meat and spitting out bones might be more confusing. I have
been studying the Bible for more years than I am going to admit to :p

I was referring to the original KJV sis.
It does not render hebrew/greek words consistantly as does other versions.

NKJV is a great translation afaik ... and I also use this one.

I thought about that too , after I posted it.
Depends on how well one is acquainted with
God and His Word, for sure.
VERY important point dies-l

Paul's not referring to the First Testament in Cor. 2, but rabbinic traditions and otherwise manmade religions observances. "taste not, touch not, handle not" is not a good synopsis of the First Testament.

How about Revelation. Sounds pretty "jewish" to me

Yeah that's why he says God nailed all the ordinances that stood against us inheriting salvation to the cross with Jesus .

that would be the law, the gentile ordinances had no such power or covenant with God to affect anything.

NRSV for normal reading (Oxford annotated). I'm not happy with all of the passages they've removed gender from, but it's just style; I haven't found any where I disagree with what they were doing.

NET for its notes on original meaning and translation.

I've used the TEV in the past. Of the modernized versions I like it the best. With my 7th and 8th grade Sunday School I use TEV in the NT and TNIV in the OT. (I may change from TNIV to NRSV or even NET. I'm not sure the TNIV is actually any more readable than the NRSV.)

I rather like the ESV notes, although it's from a more conservative brand of Reformed theology than mine. I don't use it regularly because a few of the approaches used in the translation are a bit too literal for me. If I need to see at a more literal level than the NRSV I'll use the Greek with a commentary and the NET notes.

I change my mind a lot on that. Every few weeks I get a new favorite version :). Right now I'm really into the NASB. Most the time I would say RSV though (the one that comes with the full Orthodox canon). The Douy Rheims is nice as well. Occasionaly I like the Jerusalem Bible (the old one not the NJB).

I wish the New American Standard Bible had the full Orthodox canon of the OT though.

Yes, that would be nice. If you read up on the translation history of the deuterocanonicals in English, I'm sad to say its a pitiful picture. Often times rushed, done poorly, there isn't much that's really well-done and fairly literal in English. The RSV comes close but even that did not get treated with the same degree of respect as were the other books everyone agrees on.

That's the version I read when I was first saved. I just read and read and couldn't stop reading.

Yeah, it's said the best translation of the Bible is the one you actually read. Some might be better than others but most of them (with the exception of maybe a few sectarian translation like the JW's) are good enough to get the basic message. If a version really gets you into reading and helps build desire to read more then it's probably a good version for you.
