  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What is your favorite holiday?

I have to say that I am not sure I have a favorite holiday. I find holidays too stressful because you got family on both sides who want time with you. Allow me to explain.

My birthday falls right around Memorial Weekend...this past year was on Memorial Day.

July 4th both sides want to get together for family reunions. It is hard to be two places at once.

Columbus Weekend both sides want to get together for the long weekend. So we usually refuse to be fair to both sides.

Thanksgiving is just plumb nuts because the in-laws want to be with us and if we don't spend it with them, then they lay a heavy guilt trip on us. We have been with them 19 out of the last 20 Thanksgivings.

Christmas is the same way, we decided to be with my brother for the first time and my in-laws pitched a fit this year for not wanting to spend time with them. We have been with them 18 out of the last 20 years because of the constant guilt trips.

For New Years we do not go anywhere special, mainly because either my wife has to work or I have had to work.

With everything I have said, I hate the holidays throughout the year. Forget the fact that some of them have become so secular. It is because family has placed to much stress on us. I actually spoke to my parents about what happened to this years holidays and the in-laws. They think I should put an all out ban on all holidays for all extended family for the year and it sounds like a great idea.

I love Easter, because Jesus has risen! And it's spring, the earth is coming back to life, flowers are popping up. I used to love Easter psalms as a kid. Plus, it's not too commercialized, it's full of joy and not so stressful.

I really like Christmas too, just feel it's way too materialistic and commercialized in our day and age. They start selling decorations and Christmas foods in late October and by December I almost just want it to be over.

Right now I'm really looking forward to Fastelavn, the Scandinavian version of Carnival :D

You are really lucky to be seeing Christmas decorations no sooner than the end of October. Here we start seeing them in the middle of September. A friend of mine who works in merchandising for a national retailer had her picture taken in front of the display she had done in the middle of September.

I don't mean to make this place my area to gripe about the holidays, but this is the latest stunt pulled by my in-laws...specifically my father-in-law. As we have always tried to make time for both mothers and fathers, apparently they no longer want to share.

And I quote "You will straighten up and fly right young man" mind you I am almost 46 "if we don't get to see all of you for the entire day on both Mothers Day and Fathers Day there will consequences for those actions".

Now they know I have had two seizures recently and I am not allowed to stray to far from home because the local hospital is only minutes away and they live over an hour away from the closest one, heaven forbid I have one while on the road.

Anyway, I bit my tongue but really wanted to say "what you are going to leave us out of the will, that would actually be a gift not a punishment"

My wife and I are now thinking that now might be a good time to kick in the one family rule for this year. One family, our family, no parents, no brothers, no sisters, no cousins, no aunts or uncles during any holiday whatsoever for the remainder of the year.

I got an e-mail from my mother-in-law...my father-in-law's way of getting back at us was to cut the phone lines in his house. Does this bother us, yes because if they need medical attention they have no way of calling for it and they live in a place where there is no cell service. All he has done is caused hardship for themselves.

I think my generation was the last generation of school kids from Southern Maine where we all made at least two or three trips to Boston for different sight seeing tours. We even did one with our church for the Boston Science Museum and Boston Farmers Market.

I enjoy Christmas and Thanksgiving but got to admit Easter is my favorite because we celebrate the resurrection of Christ on that day and ultimately our own birth to new life in Him.

Ms. jannikitty:

1 Corinthians 15 is certainly a tremendous passage...

Blessings.
