If you are one of those who like hip hop, pick rap.
If you are one of those who likes screamo, pick metal.
If you picked other, explain why and list a band you like etc.
Ok you get the idea.

I am basically doing this poll to see what music people like the most, which I already know. So it is just for fun. Also, list a favorite band you like.

90's grunge and alternative are my favorites (I chose rock in the poll); but I also like modern alternative, hard rock, post-rock, trance, goa, jazz, and classical.

I do love Nirvana as well as Soundgarden etc.

I used to be able to do it.

Just a few things which might help:
Push the air from your stomach.
Shape the sounds in your cheeks and nose:
Puff your cheeks, slightly when making lower sounds,
The nose is for higher sounds.

This may not makes sense, but you don't really want to use vocal cords.

Other maybe helpful things:
Enunciate,
Drink carbonated beverages and milk,
Drink orange juice.

I picked rock. I love metal, but there are so many rock genres (or subgenres) I love. Alternative, indie rock, grunge, progressive, folk, punk, blues, etc.
Some of my favorite bands: Coheed and Cambria, Foo Fighters, Rise Against, and lately a lot of Mumford & Sons, The Black Keys, Bloc Party, Arctic Monkeys, etc.

Oh and about the screaming, I actually have one of Melissa Cross's DVDs, The Art of Screaming, and it helped a bit, when I was more into metalcore and I was screaming. I would agree with most of the things said earlier. I would add that for lower screams, really round out your mouth, and for higher pitches, open up the mouth more. And carbonated beverages/orange juice actually hurt more than it helped. But if it helps you, then have at it. Drinking water is always good, and it helped me quite a bit.

And I would add, don't be foolish about it. If you do it improperly, you can really screw up your vocal cords and throat, especially when you are first starting out. If it starts hurting too bad, then take a break for a while.

Hope that helps, and good luck!

You didn't include punk...seems a little silly to me to not include it when you include so much else by name even though punk has changed music as a whole in a huge way over the past 40 years.

As it is, I tend to listen to a rather large range of music, but find myself listening to more folk (another genre that is rather important that you did not include) and punk -primarily post-hardcore stuff, admittedly- than anything else. A good bit of metal and other stuff in there as well though.

My apologies. I literally didn't think of punk when I was writing the poll options. Yes I do agree. Today's metal was heavily influenced by punk, mainly the vocals. Folk, in my opinion, would go under other or classical.

I can understand that with folk, though I personally would disagree. "Other" works fine though, yeah.

Another protip not mentioned:

For high-pitch screams, EXHALE.
Low Pitch? INHALE

Perfect example of both of how Alex K of Chelsea Grin can go nuts with his voice.

Chelsea Grin - 4. Confession / Evolve HQ/HD (Lyrics) - YouTube

Another prime example is Kyo from Dir En Grey - I DARE anyone to find a singer with more range than this guy. EDIT: I have top comment on that video, i'm so proud~ (Chris P)

Dir en Grey - Different Sense PV (HQ) - YouTube
