What is your favorite ancient civilization?

Ancient China and Rome fascinate me. China was extremely technological, even though the country was hard to get to (because of the Himalayas).

Rome is amazing because it became such a huge empire and existed for hundreds of years. Not many empires live THAT long.

I've always been a fan of ancient Rome for a number of reasons, not the least of which is their system of roads. Some of the roads built by the Julian emperors to facilitate the movement of troops across the empire are still in use today. Many of the bridges and aqueducts they built exist and function today; and they are so well built one could not fit the blade of a knife between the unmortared blocks. Today we're lucky if the highway department can make the road surface last three or four years before they have to replace it.

ancient indian . it gave so much to the world with little in return. it survives to this day. its beaten the test of time and foriegn invaders. awesome culture food dances . advanced science in ancient times. only country to have an ocean named after it

The greatest ancient civilisation for me is the pre Roman Celtic tribes living in Britain.

The area I live in would have made me a member of the Parisi tribe. Although having no great claim to fame (they pretty much rolled over when the Romans turned up) I take great pride in my heritage. I doubt that there is much, if any, actual Parisi blood left in my veins. Being on Englands east coast we have had our backsides kicked by just about everybody over the years (Romans, Angles, Saxons, Vikings and Normans), but as far as I'm concerned I'm Parisi and proud of it.

I like: 1) Ancient Israel, before the King period

2) Athens during the republic

Seem to be the only 2 civilisations that werent completely barbaric or depraved.

It's little wonder they didn't fair well against the legions.

But the legions couldnt conquer Germania, or enslave the Caledonians. Thats more than Greece or Egypt could say .

I was reading in a book last night that a lot of Roman Artefacts including a fort have been found near Dublin In Ireland. perhaps Rome had another unrecorded defeat there.

They also left a lot of babies outside to die because there was something wrong with them.

They didnt seem very hard corps against Alexander's troops or against Rome.
