  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Xseries 445 Xeon DP 3.0GHz (x4)/2GB/0 HDD/8x DVD-ROM/Gigabit NIC

The x445 is the next-generation scalable enterprise server that offers the increased XpandOnDemand scalability, industry-leading price/performance, and exceptional mission-critical availability required for today's on demand world. Optimized for server consolidation and high-end databases, the xSeries 445 combines scale-up or scale-out flexibility with the high performance of Intel Xeon processors. This 4U rack model is configured with four 3.0GHz Xeon DP processors (expandable to 16 processors), a 512KB L2 cache per processor, an integrated dual-channel Ultra320 SCSI storage controller and 2GB PC2100 DDR SDRAM (expandable to 64GB). In addition to the 400MHz front bus speed, the x445 contains six open hot-swap PCI-X slots, an 8X (max. speed) DVD-ROM drive, a 3.5" 1.44MB floppy drive and two available 3.5" external hot-swap hard drive bays for a maximum storage capacity of 292GB. The integrated Gigabit Ethernet controller handles your networking needs, while the ATI Rage XL graphics with 8MB SDRAM supports resolutions up to 1600 x 1200 in millions of colors.

Only about $24k+. Would make a nice mmorpg server. Anyone wanna buy it for me? I'm a little short right now... :sorry:

If you hadn't have bought that coffee this morning you probably would have had just enough. What does this teach us about cause and effect boys and girls?

I have that same laptop! I got it from my brother for a bargain price. :)
It runs nicely, but mine would use some more ram. :)

I'm getting quotes for it now...well, a slightly less powerful variant of what I'd really like since I'm restricted to a student budget, but it's gonna be so much better than my old Dell laptop! Basically it's a P4 3.0GHz 800FSB, 512MB RAM, 80GB HD, DVD burner and other bits that I can't remember right now - not the best, but certainly enough for me to upgrade in the future. :)

I had a chance to buy my dream computer once: A DEC PDP 11/70. I even went around to have a look and possibly buy it. It was only $100 at the time, even though it once was worth about $100,000. This beautiful computer boasted a whopping 96kB RAM and four HUGE 5MB HDDs. It came complete with two cabinets of tapes. What a deal!

Unfortunately, I took my wife with me and she exercised her power of veto over the purchase.:sigh:

Of course. The computer that can never be replaced is my MicroBee Small Business Computer. After some severe hacking I had FOUR floppy disk drives running off it, one of which was an 768kb 3.5 inch, one was a 384kb half height FDD and two FULL HEIGHT 384kb FFD's. When these drives were running the power supply heatsinks turned purple!

It had 128kb of RAM, of which only 56kb was usuable by the CPU with 8kb allocated to ROM. The upper 64kb was used as both a RAM disk and a buffer. It ran CP/M 2.2 with a fancy iconic interface. I used it as my main computer up until 1992 when I was forced to move over to a PC based system. Still, I used to run a CP/M emulator and I still chose the 'Bee as the basis for my thesis project.

I don't know much about hardware specs, but if I could get a new Dual-Layer DVD burner, P4, maximum amount of RAM supported by the hardware, and say 1.4 TB of hard disk space (internal or external) into my current comp, it'd be the perfect machine (for me, at least). From the way I estimated (I may be wrong), I could probably build it (or have it built) for under or around $4000.
