The US is hardly the only country in the world where illegal drugs are in demand - and it has managed to prevent most of its own territory from succumbing to that fate.

Speaking after talks on combatting transnational crime with their Mexican counterparts, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly both said the United States bears significant responsibility for the problem. They said U.S. demand for opioids and other drugs is the prime driver of not only devastating overdose death tolls in the United States, but also of raging gang violence in Mexico.

"We Americans must own this problem," Tillerson told reporters. "It is ours."

He called for a comprehensive campaign against domestic drug addiction combined with stepped-up intelligence and information sharing with Mexico to disrupt drug traffickers by hitting production sites, transportation networks and their cash flows.

Yes. The drug trade is going to go on, the only question is if it will be regulated and kept in check as with alcohol and cannabis in some states or if it will be handed over to violent criminals with no interest in the well being of users.

Factually incorrect. For example, Europe's share of the market for quite some time. Besides, the lack of a transnational organized problem, doesn't preclude an organized crime problem.

Also, there are plenty of other countries that are major sources of drugs that don't have the political instability that Mexico does.

Chemically altering your reality, whether it be alcohol or drugs, recreational or habitual is because there is something missing. Peace, relaxation, unwinding, euphoria, whatever you want to call it, it means that those things are missing and the answer they choose is to chemically change what they feel. It them becomes and addiction, physiological and in some cases, physical.

Drugs are the tools, the cause is power and hatred.

Drug use is highest amongst people living in poverty, because it gives them an escape from lives of misery. Drug gangs are prevalent in those places because young people in poverty will tend to lean towards ways to make money and empower themselves in a world where they’re born with nothing.

It’s almost like poverty is the big issue here. How about we try and solve that one first?

Of course it doesn't entirely preclude domestic organized crime within Mexico. However, there is no doubt that American drug dollars are mostly responsible for the size and power of the cartels.

As John Kelly, a man who has decades of experience in Latin America, said:

"The first thing we need to do, because it is -- it generates all of the problems -- and that is the drug demand in the United States," Kelly said, explaining that tackling this will be a major part of a new and innovative approach with Mexico. "The United States is indeed the magnet that feeds drug smuggling."

I don’t believe poverty is the cause.

Explain the Great Depression

Extreme poverty nationwide.

No cocaine epidemic even though it was accessible over the counter.

No appreciable rise in gangs.

Lowering our population would mean more of the wealth for each person. We have too many people.

Cocaine is a short buzz drug that is expensive. It’s about the last thing economically depressed people would have turned towards, in those pre-crack cocaine days. What you saw instead was a huge rise in alcoholism, a much cheaper drug.

As for gangs, you must be forgetting that prohibition was still in place when the Great Depression started. Gangs were very much surging, and continued strongly after prohibition was lifted and the Great Depression continued.
