This year God has led me and my two best friends to start a young adult ministry in our church. The need to reach out to our local college age students was pertinent. Me and my friends are 25, 26, and 27 years old so we are quite young ourselves. We have had difficulty finding an older leader to help us spiritually in this ministry so we have relied on God to lead us through getting this started. We have done well and have a few consistent members, praise God. Recently we had a new man come in and was put into our class. He has been a tad overbearing and grasping for a leadership role in our group. We are very thankful and blessed for him, but now it has come to the point of a situation that me and my friends don't know what to do or who to go to in our church. I need some help spiritually to make sure before I say anything that it is Biblically sound and is prayed over. Opinions are greatly appreciated in this matter, but I would love some scripture and specific examples of how to handle this situation in a way that glorifies God, even if that means I am in the wrong.
Wednesday night this new guy that we will call John calls me at 5:30, an hour before Bible Study. I did not have the best service so the call was dropped multiple times. We never got past hello. I texted him explaining that the service was spotty but if everything was okay. I got a response at 6 saying he was bringing some new people to Bible study if we could find them a ride home. I didn't hesitate in asking where they lived, but I never got a response until he showed up with this couple. I asked John where they lived and he said the couple was 44 and 29 and lived in a bad part of town, which happens to be known for drugs and shootings, 30 minutes outside of city limits, and has zero service. Me and my two friends tried to explain to John that we felt uncomfortable taking them that far without knowing them, them being older than us, and living farther out in a bad area. He was upset that we weren't willing to get out of our comfort zones to help these people. I then asked why he couldn't take them home and he replied he had choir practice, which was over by the time we were done with class. He then started preaching to us how we weren't being loving Christians and were judgmental towards these good people who were just in a rough spot. I tried to explain to John that I was not trying to be judgmental and of course they were welcome back anytime, but we three young ladies did not feel comfortable taking them to a place that makes us vulnerable and in danger. I tried to also explain that I was going to go to the deacons and see I can find an older man in our church who would drive them home and he became upset so I just dropped it and apologized for making him feel the way he feels. I feel like we are facing Satan head on in starting this ministry and I just need some spiritual guidance and encouragement. God bless!
