  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What is this man?

A young man is walking with his wife in a park after dark. They are attacked and assaulted by a group of gang members. The man's wife is shot and killed at the scene, he is also shot and left for dead but survives.

The police are unable to determine who committed the crime and the case goes cold, even with the husband's identifying the man who killed his wife there isnt enough evidence to indict.

Months go by and the husband is inconsolable until one day. He sells his home and gives his possessions away, telling people he's going to move into a motor home. With the money from the selling of his home, he purchases weapons. Several guns with a sizable amount of ammunition and a sword.

He drives to the home that is the well-known hangout of the gang responsible. Backing up to the front door with his car, he opens both doors and begins playing music from the car stereo as loud as possible. He kicks down the front door and chaos ensues. In the firefight that follows, six gang members are killed outright including the gang member that killed the man's wife who is found shot executioner-style on his knees. The man is also among the dead, suffering multiple gunshot wounds and dying of exsanguination while still firing at other gang members in the house. He is found with a picture of his wife clutched in his hand.

A newly drawn-up will is found in the man's car leaving all of his remaining wealth and possessions to his remaining family.

What would you say this man did? And what would you call him?

I would call him a widower and a mass-murderer. Why, what would you call him?

He murdered other people by becoming a vigilante.

I might use several descriptors for him. It basically depends on the when and what - victim, widower, embittered, vengeful, and perhaps even dead.

I think I saw that movie. It was awesome.
Seriously, though, I think it's ridiculous to talk about what this man did as being immoral. This is an extremely particular circumstance, in which our hero was harmed in such a way that his own life was completely without value. The assumptions that underpin our morality don't apply to him, he could no longer function as a member of society. Aristotle said that a man in this condition is either a god or a beast. Our hero sounds like both.

What is this man?
Well the product of a rather cliche story for one. But, in all seriousness it's very hard to determine if what he did was morally correct or not. On the one hand these people basically took away the most important thing in his life, away from him, and left him feeling as if there was no point to life anymore. I can't exactly then fault him for both wanting to take their lives away from them, and actually doing just that. But, in the same breath I can't help, but think to myself that his doing so purely out of revenge is wrong. I mean from the sounds of it, these gang members are dangerous and could very well, do this to someone else, and in this case they certainly need to be stopped, but was that the man's motive for doing what he did, and should his motive matter?

I would call him someone who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Punisher-light?

This is probably one of your hypothetical stories, so I have to go with good old fashioned vigilante.

You obviously have problems with our justice system! So do I! Most thinking people have a lot of problems with our out of control weak justice system.

If this were a real story, the gang members should have been rounded up and tried. If found guilty they should have been HUNG BY THE NECK UNTIL DEAD!!!

GOOD OL' COWBOY JUSTICE!!! YEA!

It's about time we get back to it!

What? How can something be weak and out of control?

You don't think this is slightly hypocritical?

GOOD OL' COWBOY JUSTICE!!! YEA!
Yeah, let's just take back the rights of gays, blacks, women, children, and reinstate segregation, the death penalty, slavery, child labour, and legal marital abuse. Those are the things that make a country great: unabashed violence.

I dont know what I would call him. You haven't said what his name is.

And I think what he did was weak. Anyone can give up their life, and anyone can kill someone. It takes true strength to forgive, and to go on with one's life.

I'd call him a man who died a good death. He avenged his wife at the cost of his own life.

This is probably one of your hypothetical stories
No, it was my weekend **eye roll*

And I think what he did was weak. Anyone can give up their life, and anyone can kill someone.
I disagree. To actually take life and to give up one's regard for their own life is extremely difficult. Killing someone isnt like they show it in the movies. To be willing to forgo one's life and to be actually ABLE to do it is probably one of the few great ends a person can closeout their lives with.

It takes true strength to forgive, and to go on with one's life.
See I think "forgive and forget" is a good policy for small things, small blights. But if someone has deliberately taken the life of someone you love, I think it would be an insult to forgive and forget.

Except towards homosexuals, pagans, idolaters, murderers, blasphemers, etc.
Who feeds you these lies? Please point to me the scripture ordering Christians to take vengeance against those kinds of people. Then perhaps I'll be convinced of what you say "Christianity" teaches, then question what the heck I've been learning.
What would I say this man did? This man went and brought revenge on some people for the murder of his wife. What would I call him? An avenger. I won't call him right or wrong, I haven't been through this sort of situation.
