Satan, as a lower created angelic person, Lucifer, was not ALL knowing. He did not spiritually discern his own demise and fate.

Satan had, as Aquinas would put it, inordinate self-love, aka "pride". This is a twisting of a God-created good: self-love, into an exaltation of the self above all else, even above truth because pride is willing to dominate and control that as well, for its own perceived benefit. In fact falsehood entered with Lucifer's fall; the first lie believed and adhered to was that he was equal to or superior to God. He loved self more than God.

He lacked the truth that no created being can ever be completely independent of God.

To be independent of Him is simply not the nature of the relationship of the will of the creation to the will of the creator .

He's God and we are not and we can never be God.

Would that many who beat the drum for absolute free will would get the message Lucifer will eventually learn.
