When my daughter was in high school she worked in a fabric store. She said people stole small items--zippers, buttons, ribbons, etc. all the time.

She reported it to her manager when she first noticed it and her manager said, "We don't have a store detective. We're just three females here (and the manager had a lot of problems standing and walking.) It would be dangerous for us to try to stop them and hold them until the police come, so we just let it go..

You would be surprised what things like buttons and zippers cost. I think a lot of people just figured they could walk off with them, got what they needed for their sewing projects, and walked out. But my mind was just boggled thinking about how much extra the store had to charge to make up for these losses.

I don't know if this is the common response in smaller stores with a few employees, but if it is we are paying the price in society.

And no, knowing this never encouraged my daughter or me to take it up. We pay for what we get.
