Hypocrisy, isn't new to religion, or christianity.. Look at all of the times Jesus calls out the Pharisees, and all of the time Paul spent in his letters "correcting christian behavior."

I think it's a need to full fill one's own desire to be righteous, but also filling their own need to pursue personal desire or personal gain. Kind of a "Self-Righteousness"

Ummm....yes, I have many thoughts on the root of that issue. But those thoughts might totally derail this thread.

To rattle off a few ideas off the top of my head without thinking them through too deeply:
Ego, the wealth and comfort of North America, pride, judgmentalism, the tendency to worry about specks in other peoples' eyes, not to mention shallow theology and Biblical study and rampant blind literalism and adherance to Christian-ish myths as opposed to being willing to struggle with God.

If anyone feels the need to go into this further, perhaps they could PM me or start a new thread, I do not wish to derail this one.

i'm opting for "other"
A scripture comes to mind; "As the king is, so is the people"
IOW, the leadership is the problem.
The student will only be what they learn from the teacher.
If the pastor/preacher/minister/priest- whatever you want to call them- is spiritually dead, the rest will follow.
They are more interested in numbers (filling the pews). If they are a dead church, why would they want more dead people ?

There is an overwhelming lack of fear of the Lord.

Without it there is not much respect or obedience to God. Its like working for a lax boss. You do what you have to but you get away with whatever you think you can. So it is going with people, Christians, and God now.

Now there's some irony for you.

There are several problems in the church today:

liberalism

Aberant movements, such as the Emergent Movement, WoF, etc

The refusal of churches to practice church discipline

The idea that all one has to do is to say a prayer and they're a Christian, or attend a Christian church and they're a Christian

The refusal of so many Christians to submit to the authority of scripture

The refusal of most Christians to preach the Gospel

yea...and all of these things are a direct result of the LEADERSHIP BEING DEAD.

IT'S THE BLIND LEADING THE BLIND

It's not religiously correct to say the s word- SIN !
