What was the mark of the beast?

No one knows for sure because the meaning of the mark has been lost to time, but it was probably a reference to the Law (which God said was to be placed bound on the hand or forehead). Scripture, not the modern newscast, is the first best interpreter of scripture.

The first rule of sound exegesis is to understand the text as its author and its original audience would have understood it. Since there is no way in heaven and earth anyone in the first century would have thought, "Oh! That's a reference to a thing they'll call a 'computer chip' that will be invented nearly two millennia from now; we should be on the lookout for that."

Modern futurism is irrational and unscriptural.

It is all speculative, and I don't know what John or Jesus expected readers to get from this? There is some precedent for God judging who has whose name, with respect to God or idols.

Regardless, this is my thought. 666 refers to the name of the Roman Empire that Antichrist will put together. We will have that identification put on people in order to be part of the economy. However, when a person chooses to identify with this Empire they are directly accepting the Antichrist as God.

It is the number of a MAN .... it is a MAN putting forth a false worship system ... the book of Revelation is about worship ... the mark are those who partake in a false worship system .... the mark is not a physical thing ... it is a spiritual condition (worship is spiritual not physical)

One either has the seal of God or the mark of the beast.

The seal is given to true worshipers of God while the mark is given to worshipers of the beast. The seal is given only in the forehead, indicating a definite choice of the mind to worship God in the way that He has commanded. The mark, on the other hand, is given either in the forehead or in the hand (thinking and doing)

The seal of God is found only in the forehead because it springs from worship and faith as opposed to works.

• Do you ever give thought to using scripture first to understand the book of Revelation?
• Do you ever question the teachings of those who measure scripture by the 21st century and not other scripture or the understanding of the original readers?

I do not know to what specific eschatology you subscribe, but it appears to be Dispensational Premillennialism (DP). Is that correct? If so, then how familiar are you with the history of DP? What knowledge is possessed of the other, more historical and orthodox positions? If that is not correct, then to what end-times view do you subscribe?

I guess you have never read Luke 21 or the Oilvet discourse in Matthew 24. To stand before Jesus (Son of Man) you have to be where He will be. Which will be in the clouds, after Jesus leaves heaven on His way back to earth (to fight for Israel) Jesus tabernacles in the clouds while the tribulation is carried out.

“But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.”
