depends on the situation. If I were say, gambling, I would take no more than I was willing to lose in cash. Typically when I go on vacations I carry $200-$400 in my wallet just in case I need it, plus on vacations it's easier when splitting bills/hotel costs with people if you have cash. Day to day though I typically carry from 0-$40.

The largest amount of cash I have ever carried with me was 650$, which I carried about a mile and a half from the bank to my landlord's place to pay the rent, in broad daylight.

As to how much I WOULD carry with me, it depends. If I'm planning on walking somewhere (more than a block or so in a residential neighboorhood), probably not much more than that. If I'm just going to hop in a car, go the the atm, hop back in the car, go somewhere, walk from a parking spot right outside into a building, and give it to someone (say a car payment), I'd be comfortable carrying a lot more, maybe a few thousand (assuming I had that much). OTOH, walking alone down an ill traveled road, or at night, I would carry as little as possible.

The largest amount of cash I've ever had on my person was $10,000. I'd never carry that much around - but I had a very good night at the craps table at the casino. I'm not aware that the casino writes cheques. Maybe they do, I should ask.

Otherwise, normally not more than AUD $150 or so.

i rarely carry cash unless i know i'm going to be spending it soon. i went to a restaurant, sat down with my food, and then realized they don't accept debit cards. i had to get up and explain to the woman that i thought they accepted plastic. i had to leave and go find an ATM for cash.

really people. this is the 21st century. get with the program.
