Biblically, a prophecy is the divine will or purpose of God uttered by a person (prophet), sometimes predicting a future event.

A revelation is...

...the same thing, without so much emphasis on the one through whom it's communicated (such as John's Revelation, vs prophecies uttered by the OT prophets).

Prophecy is defined as "Edification and Exhortation and Comfort" in our NT. All three of those things will be in a prophecy to the congregation.

Revelation is a part of the revelation gifts such as the word of knowledge, word of wisdom, or discerning of spirits.

Where things become confusing for people is when a person starts using the gift of the word of knowledge combined with prophecy. You would only see this on a personal level, not corporate.

One small note,... just because a person has the gift of the word of knowledge working through them, does not make them a prophet. Same with the gift of prophecy, that doesn't make them a prophet either. Anyone can have these gifts flowing through them if they received the baptism of The Holy Spirit.

A prophet is a specific office given to a person by The Holy Spirit, and it will have the revelation gifts working through that person, but also the power gifts.

Anyone that calls themselves a prophet who doesn't have the power gifts working through them on a regular basis, such as the gift of faith, the working of miracles, and the gifts of healings, is not a prophet. Both the OT and the NT is clear on that particular aspect.
