Condoms stink.

Yes, the cheap ones do. If you're gonna use condoms, you have to use the good ones.

Again, I say: Crown Skinless Skin and Beyond Seven. Hubby likes Trojan's Elexa Ultra Sensitive.

None of these brands stink, literally or figuratively.

No one form of contraceptive is right for everyone. The best thing is to visit your family planning clinic after having done a bit of reading yourself and discuss the options with your health care provider, who will conduct a medical examination to exclude risk factors you may not have realized you had.

Thanks everyone for you're thoughts.

The Pill. I've been doing some more research and after reading about the longterm effects of the pill, increased risk of: blood clots, various cancers, heart disease and almost countless other longterm problems. I don't think I could put my wife to be through that and she doesn't want to risk it. Thanks to people who mentioned things like this, and also those who pointed out that the pill is also abortifacient - causes abortion.

So the pill is out.

Condoms look like a better option now after listening to what some people have said. Especially gracefaith. Might have to see how we feel about that after trying. Thanks for all that advice.

NFP found out alot more about that, that its actually 99% effective when done properly. Rather than my made up thoughts of 80% or something and its also a lot easier than I thought as well. So that might be a good possiblity.

Thanks again for everyone's help.

Ok so I´m engaged to be married in 2006 and one of the big issues we are talking through is contraception. It would be great to get some advice from people who have used or are using the different types of contraception.

What is the best form of contraception and why?

If you could give the pros and cons that would be great, especially for condoms, NFP, the pill and the patch.
That depends on what you're looking for.
If you're looking for the safest form of birth control, I say, condoms.
No worrying about forgetting the pill. No worrying about medical
side effects.

A con I've heard about from other married males is that it reduces
the sense of "closeness" during "the experience."

Contraception is a bad idea because it is an insult to an important part of marriage. Its like you don't like a part of yourself or your partner so you can't accept it as is. It also shows a lack of trust in God's providence.
A conservative unitarian? I thought I'd never see the day.

Yes. Exactly! it doesn't feel like love-making
when there's a condom. It just feels like you're
having sex with a condom.

I always looked at it as a way to control pregnancy. "All the time" isn't always a good time for bringing a baby into the world, even when married.

Leaving it up to God's providence is passing the buck and the responsibility for assuring any children will have a good shot at life. God doesn't prevent pregnancies in people with a mutated Huntington's gene, does he? Pregnancies in single women? Rape victims? Women he knows will die from their pregnancy? Women he knows can't afford to care for a child? Or even women who just don't want to be pregnant right now? If he hates abortion so much, his "providence" in these areas would surely do more good than any amount of clinic protesting ever could. The reality of it is that sexual encounters bring about babies, not divine providence. If you don't take steps to prevent pregnancy, they will keep occurring as long as health allows, whether or not it is wise choice.

Mary was pregnant and not married. These days I wonder if Jesus would have made it.

These days many people try to control too many aspects of their lives and it makes them exhausted and unhappy. Sometimes God throws things like downs syndrome children into people's lives to give them something to live for. Try to control all the variables in your life and trust God with as much as you can justify in your mind. Take note of how the areas you trust God with compare to the areas you try to control on your own. Seriously, do it and see if you note a difference. I did and now the areas I try to control are very minimal compared to what they used to be. God has shown himself to be a brilliant steward in many areas of my life which I have entrusted to his care.
