"For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh [craving for sensual gratification] and the lust of the eyes [greedy longings of the mind] and the pride of life [assurance in one’s own resources or in the stability of earthly things]—these do not come from the Father but are from the world [itself]." I John 2:16

lust of the flesh includes:
19 "Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God." Gal 5

"They are filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and vice; stuffed with jealousy, murder, quarrelling, dishonesty and ill-will; they are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God; they are insolent, arrogant and boastful; they plan evil schemes; they disobey their parents; 31 they are brainless, faithless, heartless and ruthless." Rom 1

lust of the eyes Includes "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's." Exo 20:17, Eph 5

pride of life: we know this one.

Thankfully "But God demonstrates his own love for us in that the Messiah died on our behalf while we were still sinners." Rom 5:8 "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord." Acts 3:19 When we fail as believers - "But if we confess our sins to God, he can always be trusted to forgive us and take our sins away." I John 1:9

Aim: "Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. " 39 "And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself." Matt 22:36-40

These we can only do with His help.

I was wondering what the definition of sin was in the bible from Christians and wanted to know more about Sin in general. What is sin and what are some examples of sin?
1 John 3:4 "sin is transgression of the law" of God
1 Cor 7:19 "what matters is keeping the commandments of God"
1 John 2:1 "these things I write to you that you sin not. But if anyone sins we have an advocate with the Father"

Whenever Jesus was asked about the Law of God , about the commandments of God - He always quoted from the Law of Moses

Whenever Paul gave examples of the Law of God, Commandments of God - he always quoted from the Law of Moses

Anything considered immoral behavior.
Defined in the Christian perspective:
  • Missing the mark: This definition is based on the Hebrew word for sin, "chata," which means "to miss the mark." It suggests that sin is any act that falls short of God's perfect standard for humanity.
Blessings.

Sin is transgression of God's laws .... based on the 10 commandments .... Jesus taught from the OT, Jesus gave more details regarding the 10. When you study what Jesus taught you can see where His teachings all relate back to the 10.

Some examples here ...

The 10 of the OT are in the NT - just not all grouped together.
In Eph 5:2 Paul reminds us that "honor your father and mother is the first commandment with a promise" in that unique unit of TEN - still valid in the NT

I was wondering what the definition of sin was in the bible from Christians and wanted to know more about Sin in general. What is sin and what are some examples of sin?

In simplest terms sin is failure or error, to "miss the mark" is often a literal translation of the biblical terms used. The concept of harmatia, which is the Greek word the New Testament consistently uses which is translated as "sin" literally means "error" or "flaw".

The idea here is that there is what we should do, but we don't do it; and there is what we shouldn't do, but we do it anyway. The what we should do is do what is good and right. The what we shouldn't do, is do what is evil and wrong.

This what we should do and what we shouldn't do is usually described as God's Law, such as the Ten Commandments.

There is a story about the ancient Jewish sage Hillel the Elder. A non-Jew, hostile to Judaism, went to various Jewish teachers asking "can you explain the Law?" And many teachers tried but failed. But then the man came to Hillel, asked him the question, and Hillel responded, "Don't do to others that which is hateful to you. Everything else is commentary." This same sentiment is echoed by Jesus Himself in the Gospels, when Jesus says, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you, this is the whole of the Law and the Prophets".

Thus sin is often regarded as trespass, or transgression--a violation of God's Law. The mark we are to aim for is to do good and live rightly--rightly in relation to God, rightly in relation to our fellow human beings, rightly in relation to all of creation. Not hitting that mark, missing it, failing it, and doing what is not that--that's sin. Sin is everything that falls short and fails to be truly and fully good and righteous. Whether by intention, or even unintentionally; whether by acts of commission or acts of omission--doing what we shouldn't, failing to do what we should. Not loving God with our whole heart, mind, and strength; not loving our neighbor as ourselves. Not just in our concrete acts, but in our words, and our thoughts--or even our feelings.

In this way, sin isn't just what we do or don't do; sin is, in a sense, inside of us. St. Paul the Apostle writing to the Christians in Rome speaks of sin as existing in his bodily members--it's like sin is right there in his very skin and bones, tripping him up. So much so that even when he wants to do good, he does evil.

That's sin.
