Shaul spoke of "sound doctrine" in 1 and 2 Timothy, to understand his idea of what sound doctrine is who better to tell us then him

2 Timothy 4:3-4, "For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts they will heap to themselves teachers, who will tickle their ears; telling them what they want to hear. And they will turn away their ears from the truth, and will be turned to fables."

1 Timothy 1:8_10, "We know indeed that the Law is perfect, if one agrees with the Law, taking it to himself to use; Knowing this: That the Law is not only laid down for a righteous man, but also for the lawless and disobedient, for the unrighteous and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, For whoremongers; sodomites, catamites, for fornicators; sexually impure, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers; vowing oaths falsely, and all other things that are opposed to sound doctrine."

Not everything he said was against the 10 (or 9 to most) Commandments, however everything he said was against the Law of Yahweh. So when Shaul is refering to sound doctrine, is he not talking about the instructions that come from Yashweh? aka the Law of Yahweh?

And in 2 Timothy saying people will not subject themselves to the Law of Yahweh?

Romans 3:31, "Are we then doing away with the Law through the faith? By no means! Rather, we establish the Law!"

Hizikyah,
I'd like to first say I appreciate your question. The two words "sound doctrine" in both passages above are hygiainō didaskalia in the original language (Koine Greek). Literally translated hygiainō means healthy and didaskalia means teaching.

The translators simply chose the words "sound doctrine" when they translated your translation of the New Testament.

Therefore, consider the following verses:

16 "All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work." - 2 Timothy 3:16-17

21 "Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls. 22 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves." - James 1:21-22

(In James 1:22, instead of delude some translations say deceive. The word in Koine Greek is paralogizomai which literally means "to reason amiss".)

I hope this helps!

Sound doctrine relates to those things the Apostles taught to the churches, all of which were strongly supported by Scripture. Sound doctrine is that which does not go against the first principles of the oracles of God as listed in Hebrews 6, but are little provided to believers today. For if one is not established in these, there is no way he/she can reach maturity in Christ. They are not learned merely by reading, but are taught line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little by well qualified teachers of the faith. Not enduring sound doctrine means that one is unable to live a life that attests to the truths found in Scripture. Instead, he/she will pick and choose what best suits them, heaping to themselves teachers, having itching ears, and departing from the faith.

I believe Clearly sound doctrine is "obedience" to what Christ taught. So if we think sound doctrine is just saying the teachings right then I do not believe that lines up with what the Apostles believed.

Jesus Christ taught if we want to be on the solid rock we must hear and OBEY what He taught - Matthew 7.

This is not sound doctrine which you are promoting. You have taken verses out of context to "prove" something which is also known as "proof texting." It's a slippery slope.

The Law - the 10 plus the 613 - show all men to be guilty. Paul said that if one is guilty of any part of the Law then he is guilty of ALL of the Law. The Law is obsolete. The Levitical Priesthood is gone! Read the Book of Hebrews - all of it and not just a few verses.

Christ is our Great High Priest and He makes intercession before the Father on behalf of those who have put their faith in His finished work. We are under a New Covenant established by the blood of Christ. Christ's blood is an ongoing covering for sin. Our righteousness is imputed by His righteousness. If you never committed a conscious sin you would still be found guilty without the righteousness of Christ. We are to be clothed in His righteousness. The following was not written by John Calvin but by Paul as he was led by the Holy Spirit.

1Cor 15:22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.

Paraphrase...

"I completely testify before God and Jesus Christ who will gloriously appear to Judge both the living and the dead and consummate his Kingdom that you herald the truth. Be ready when things are favorable or not. Convict, refute and encourage with great patients and instruction. Because there will be a time when some will not put up with wholesome teaching. But driven by various passions, they will accumulate teachers to scratch their itching ears. And so they will turn from the truth toward the Gnostic Eons(myths, fables)". 2 Timothy 4:1-4.

Good wholesome healthy teaching is only something to put up with by those who hate the truth. But for us it is a sweet-smelling aroma! There is nothing wrong with getting your ears tickled so long as you hearken them unto the truth(as opposed to falsehood).
