  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What is repentance from dead works?

Heb 6-1 "Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,"

In most of the sermons I've watched or articles I've read on the topic, teachers usually fall into one of two camps: saying that repentance from dead works is either repentance from sin or repentance from acts that you think are a substitute for what Jesus did on the cross/acts to earn favor with God.

Which camp is right? Are they both right? Could someone clarify what repentance from dead works is? Could you use scriptural examples from Jesus' ministry to help explain?

dead works

Matthew 7:21-22

21Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’

Repentance from dead works is repentance from works "unto death", i.e., sins that lead to death. The meaning is to turn from mortal sin.

This has to do with " milk or meat" Christians. Some are not growing in their faith but rather, keep questioning the " basics". In other words, not growing in their walk which results in no fruits of the Holy Spirit. Blessings

Those passages are rendered differently in my NIV 1984; it reads as follows...
vss 1-3:
Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, instructions about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3 And God permitting, we will do so.
In this rendering we would see a repentance of deeds which lead to death...eternal damnation.

Dead works: Trying to save yourself by being ”good” (impossible, if you break one law you’re quilty of them all and Jesus was the only one who never sinned) and trying to crusify yourself on the cross putting Jesus in open shame.

Dead faith: Saying you love Jesus and saying you trust in the Lord Jesus, but you try to save yourself with dead works and don’t believe that Jesus is your saviour and He did the work on the cross. This person trusts more in everyone but not in Jesus. They don’t trust that God is in control and everything that happens is God’s will on earth as it is in heaven.
They try to take control of things happening, not trusting in God Almighty.

And here is what one teacher that I knows says .

BLOOD OF ANIMALS
#1 EARTHLY BENIFETS
#2 they were victims
#3 covered sins
#4 inferior blood - tainted by sin
#5 could not bring salvation
#6 offered continually
#7 related to the old covenant
#8 could not make perfect
#9 limited capability
#10 cleansed the flesh

BLOOD OF CHRIST
#1 eternal benifets
#2 death was voluntary
#3 took aways sins forever
#4 superior blood , sinless
#5 unlimited power
#6 His blood did bring salvation
#7 offered once
#8 perfected believers forever
#9 related to the new covenant
#10 cleansed the conscience

This iks the difference between the blood of BULLS and GOATS and the blood of the Son of God and the first list are the DEAD WORKS .
