What is in bread that I need to avoid?

Pre-workout is when the 'carb' type foods should be consumed, but if you are working out for less than 1 hr. it is not necessary. Marathoners carb load and consume the 'sugary' type drinks, gelcaps etc. before a during the race/exercise. Post workout high sugar foods provides your body with too much sugar/energy, a blood sugar spike/drop, insulin rush, etc. And most importantly, your body will collect it as energy (blood glucose/muscle glycogen) and because you are not using it (like during exercise) will store any extra as FAT!
I will consume fruit in the evening, you may be considering high sugary foods as fruit? I consider the undesirable sugary foods to be cookies, cake, candy etc.
Then again, Tuffguy has specific goals to bulk up right now, so perhaps he takes a different approach?

Back to laundry now, and driving kids to and fro, God Bless,J
Actually, eating high GI foods before working out isn't that great an idea. If you workout for any length of time you will come down off of this spike during your workout and the last end of it will be really rough to get through. I like eating oatmeal about 1hr before i lift. This really helps give me a constant flow of energy throughout the workout. (usually 45-60mins)

The reason bodybuilders eat sugary foods after a workout is to give yourself that insulin spike and to quickly replenish glycogen stores in your muscles. After a workout you want protien and carbs. If you just have a low carb protien shake you're body will not be able to get your glycogen stores up and will continue to canibalize itself looking to rebuild muscle.
After a workout you want calories calories calories. Many amatures like myself eat up to 60grams of carbs and 40-50 grams of protien, right after working out.
This is why the creatine delievery systems (creatine and fruit juice) have become so popular and do work. Creatine and dextrose after a workout helps rebuild, volumize, and replenish glycogen stores.
I have found that if i dont' get a bunch of carbs after working out,,i feel terrible. Very low energy and lazy. If i throw in some sugar or something like it, into my protien drinks, i feel like superman.
Check it out. This is very popular in the weight training world.

BTW: Holding steady at 194 right now. Only up a few lbs. This 2nd shift schedule is hurting my lifts. I've also got an elbow that is causing bicept and hand pain. Sucks.

Like I said, Tuffguy has specific goals. And one should never eat candy or bad carbs. only good complex carbs for slow release any time. Most people do not want to gain weight, so your goals are specific. J

"Personally I eat only wheat bread. If you can, try to get the kinds that has calcium in it. I am supposed to get extra calcium so I am always buying stuff that is enriched with calcium."

Not a good idea, because calcium alone is not good for you. You need Vitamins A, D, magnesium, manganese, and zinc to absorb calcium. Without these, calcium can actually be drawn out of your bones.

"Breads that are made from wheat and grains, tend to not contain any, or little starch."

Wheat actually contains the highest amount of sugars, and less nutrients than other grains. All grains contain starch, otherwise they would contain no energy with which to sprout. A head of wheat is made up of 3 parts: the endosperm (sugars), bran (fiber) and germ (nutrients). White bread has the bran and germ removed, hence no nutrients or fiber and a high G.I.

"Sugar is sugar. It doesn't matter it its natural or processed. It really does the same thing in your body. "
That is so wrong I don't even know where to begin. Processed vs. natural is the biggest difference. God gave us every plant to eat, we processed the nutrients out of them and and tinker with their chemical makeup, and now we can't figure out where all these diseases are coming from. Stay away from the processed junk. It's not what God intended for us, and our bodies are not able to deal well with them.

Now, to answer the original question. I eat New England Brown Bread. There are five ingredients, and none of them involve "high fructose" or "partially hydrogenated." But remember, just because it says "wheat" doesn't mean it's healthy. Avoid the high fructose corn syrup and the partially hydrogenated oils and you'll be ahead of 90% of the people out there.

Calcium absorption mainly relys on serveral hormones and vitamin D. Providing you get enough sunlight on your skin you don't need a dietary intake of vitamin D. There are also things that tamper with your calcium absorption. Calcium can often, especially in non-animal foods, be bound so that the body is unable to absorb it. Phytates (found in wholegrain cereals and pulses) and oxalates (found in spinach and rhubarb) make calcium unavailable for absorption in the body. This is most likely why that bread has extra calcium added to it...the calcium in it isn't bioavailable so they've added some that is.

Personally the only thing about bread I try and avoid is the infamous Bread^Monster!

breadmonster2.jpg

The Bread^Monster's breeding habitat consists of family breadboxes and cupboards... and it is typically found lurking the dark recesses of your kitchen after you and your loved ones return home from month long vacations at the lake. Defeating the Bread^Monster can be a difficult thing to accomplish... and is best attempted by the house chef with his/her sharpest knife and a "rapid dicing" motion. The minced results, although somewhat gruesome... when combined with rose^mary, thyme, cloves, chopped-almonds, olive-oil and stuffed into a turkey and roasted... can result in a suprisingly pleasant culinary experience. :yum:

But be forewarned... consume the turkey leftovers within 3 days or be prepared to face ... The Turkey^Monster!

Yeah, trust fallen to perk things up! :D

I've been thinking of doing what my mom does. Buy all kinds of whole grains. Get a flour mill and make my own flour. She has recipes and I could easily get them from her.....if I remember. I don't like white bread. Causes problems for me. But that's just me. I seem to have a picky body and it reacts to certain foods...

Which is why i also stated the difference between sugar and natural forms. One has some nutrients the other doesn't. If you eat a sweet pear or drink 100% pure orange juice your body will undergo the same insulin spike if you at a portion of a candy bar.
Thats why i said, sugar is sugar.
