The Christian in Complete Armour, William Gurnall

This is the book John Newton said he would choose if he could only have one book in addition to his bible. I first read it in the newer abridged paper back but am now reading the hardback unabridged edition and love it! So full of great thoughts it seems in every line!

Not reading anything particular right now. I've been listening to a 4cd set titled The Twelve Tribes by Mike Clayton. Completely awesome and fun to listen to. The guy is a great speaker. I've heard them through twice taking notes. Now I'm going do do some extra study on them. This thread was a great idea. I never know what's good and what's not.

C.S. Lewis' "Mere Christianity" and
and the first book in the "Left Behind" series.
I read the Left Behind series when it first came out and it was very good. The last few books drag and the very last book should have been summed up in about one chapter as far as I'm concerned but no regrets reading the series. Hope you enjoy it.

Come Be My Light, Mother Teresa's letters to her confessors and spiritual directors, in which she describes a 50 year struggle with 'the dark night of the soul,' during which, despite her strong faith, she had no perceptible experience of God's presence in her life.

I began the book thinking she was one of the most extraordinary women in history. I finished the book convinced more than ever of her saintliness.

If you have ever been discouraged with the evil you see all around you, and need a little proof of the power of good in our world, read this book!

And no, I am not a devotee of "do good" books--I love fun books, too--Janet Evanovich's Twelve Sharp, for example. But I left Mother Teresa's letters and started Giving by former President Bill Clinton. Most of us can never aspire to be Mother Teresa, but Clinton gives lots of examples of everyday folks who have made a difference here in the US and throughout the world, and lots of resources through which we can make a difference, too.

Sorry everyone. I asked the question and then disappeared off the forum for a week, with moving preparations! You are all serious readers! Having recently read some psychology, including John Bowlby's Attachment and Loss, I decided to have some light relief! Earlier in the thread I mentioned that I was looking for clean fiction, and think I may have found a good author in Laura Childs and her Tea Shop Mysteries. I've read the first one, and quite enjoyed it. The main characters are nice and the emphasis is on the mystery, not the crime. There were a few things I wasn't too keen on, but it was a wholesome read, and kept me turning the page, if not thoroughly engrossed. Sue

I like Sigmund Brower books not sure if I mentioned that before. http://www.coolreading.com/library.htm
I have kind of lost touch with the christian lit market but I love And the Shofar Blew by Francine Rivers.
She also wrote a fabulous trilogy called
The Mark of the Lion trilogy:
A Voice in the Wind
An Echo in the Darkness and
As sure as the Dawn

The first two are totally connected and the third is the continuing legacy of Hadassah the heroine in the first two books. A very satisfying read.

One of the issues here, Jan, is the public funding for religious schools. The problem I have with that is the reason we formed Christian schools years ago. If the presenting party has their way, all schools will have to teach evolution as a proven science, when in fact, it is the religion of atheism, and is an unproven science.

A lot of people are just thinking about the funding and are not reading all the facts.

Cheers,

Jim

PS, Funding for Catholic schools is entrenched in the BNA and in the new constitution repatriated under Trudeau. It is not easy to change.

I know I responded to a CTV internet news article about this debate. As I see it those who send their kids to private schools pay dearly for the privileges and the majority of their tax monies still go into the public pot for education. Private schools have a choice in BC how much money they will accept from the government. Jan

I just finished reading Lady Bird Johnson's 'White House Diaries'. It's out of print now, but my local library had it. I remember the Johnson's in the White House, but I was very young. She was an amazing woman...smarter & more interesting than I thought. I highly recomend it. I am waiting to start the book "Indian Summer", about the independance if the nation of India.
