What is everyone reading?

Nope, I'm still reading.

I studied a wonderful old book on Zechariah this summer by David Baron. I thought I would work through it in a week, but instead it was soooo deep it took about 6 weeks.

Read another old Mike Evans book (I really should read his new one) and now I'm reading Michael Crichton's book State of Fear.

Looking over this thread I see Bevlina's post. I miss her.

I read and post in GE 50+ almost DAILY
and feel really pleased that I am able to do so

SPARE TIME is pretty rare... as I equate 'that'
with boredom which I never seem to suffer-from

I love to read.

Most of my reading time is spent with my bible. I admit, I am rough on my bibles. I mark them up with colored pencil crayons, scribble in the margins, compare scripture with scripture, and note those connections. I used to think that the bible was too holy to treat this way. But then I heard J. Vernon McGee say that if you don't have a bible you can mark up, you'd better throw that away and get yourself something you can write in. And I heard someone else say better to have a worn-out, falling-apart bible than to have a falling-apart life. Apparently I'm not the only one who is hard on bibles!

Recently I got a new bible--this time REAL leather, not the bonded type which seems to fall apart fast. Maybe I can use this daily for more years. At least I hope. I get attached to my bibles, and laying one aside, to use only as a reference, is like laying aside a favorite stuffed animal when I was a child...

I also read other books. Recently I am re-reading Smith Wigglesworth's Ever Increasing Faith. I feel convicted every time I pick it up. My faith seems so limpid compared to his. But I am going on with God, and I pray that I may grow in Him everyday and be strengthened in Him!

I like fiction as well. For a while I was following my husband through his "Who Done It" series--Connelly, Baldacci, Ludlum, etc. But these books got too dark for me. I had to give them up.

I like historical fiction. A lot of times, though, I end up trashing the books I buy. It's too bad there is not a rating system for books, like there is for movies. I'd like to know beforehand if the book I'm considering has sex scenes, etc. in them. I don't want to encounter this type of stuff.

So, I would really be interested in hearing from others, suggestions for books which are clean and uplifting.

Ariel, have you read the Mitford Series books by Jan Karon? Delightful fiction, clean, uplifting and very loving in the path of the Lord.
Also, Garrison Keillor has some good stuff out there. "We Are Still Married" is a wonderful book, based on facts from his childhood into adulthood.
I am currently intrigued with a series of books by Tim Lahaye and Jerry Jenkins. I am just getting into the first book, called "Left Behind" and I have to make myself put it down to sleep at night.
Just a few suggestions for you.
(Oh, and just in case you are like me, Jan Karon's books do come in large print! And I suggest buying them from the used book large print section at your local book store.)

How I agree with Ariel's comments about clean and uplifting books, and having a rating system. I have tried a few new authors and ended up binning the books because of bad language, sex or violence. Doesn't anyone write good, wholesome, entertaining novels anymore?! (Incidentally Ariel, I think a marked Bible can be a sign of a holy life; someone taking it seriously. Isn't there a line in a Cliff Richard song "When a Bible is well used, the devil's not amused" or something like that?)

I've been doing research and serious reading recently, so when I relax I want to be entertained. I love Jane Austin, but have read all of her novels, then I started on Georgette Heyer's Regency works but have read them all (although I wish they wouldn't say "Good G.." etc), and I also enjoy Agatha Christie (whodunnits concentrating on solving the mystery, not the death) but...you've guessed it, I've read most of them (one or two I've avoided as I think they include occult references).

Back in the 1960s my parents and I read Mary Stewart's stories, which were romance/mysteries set in various Mediterranean locations. (One was turned into a film: the Moonspinners.) They are back in print and just the sort of books I long to read again except that one contains telepathy. I would avoid that one, but have doubts now about getting any of them. Has anyone else read them? I have been desperately looking for something similar, without supernatural overtones, for holiday reading. A nice adventure, with just a hint of danger, preferably set somewhere sunny and exotic and perhaps a romance. Has anyone got any ideas??

I'll have a look at some of the books you've suggested to Ariel below, Clairefish, otherwise it's back to Mr Darcy again!

I'm familiar with Jane Austin. Like you, Rebornfree, I think I've read everything she's written and no, I'm not ready for Mr. Darcy again. I need to find something else.

I've read that whole series, Claire.. I had a hard time putting them down.. Great series..

I'm on the 2nd book of a 6 (soon to be 7) book series by the Thoene's.. The AD Chronicles.. they're wonderful too..

Just picked up a small book titled: Attracting Birds, Butterflies and other backyard wildlife. It is published by the National Wildlife Federation (USA). It relates on how to attract this wildlife to your back garden and is very interesting. Even helps to identify the various breeds.

I have enough wildlife without attracting more. eg. bears, deer, skunks, rats squirrels never seen a cougar or a coyote here but they are around the north shore from time to time. I can't attract birds with feeders as it attracts the bears and the vermin. Yikes . Oh well I get crows and sometimes robins. Jan

Well, here is the coyote for you. I took this photo a few days ago. I was within 14 feet of him, but he started to run as I took the photo...so, a little blurry....I would love to get closer. He was in the field near me...you can see the wire fence in the photo across his body. He was lovely though.
