CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I hate to be a downer, but nothing. We have no friends nor relatives we could find, so just do nothing, as the buses don't even run well that day.
Wednesday we may go to this local church for the free meal, and last year they served turkey and fixings, so that was good.

Cooking, made pies today stuffing get ready tomorrow along with 20 pounds of potatoes, church meal tomorrow night, also cake. Stuff turkey and make deviled eggs get everything ready. Will haveperson from church over that has nowhere to go.

Cooking - although I'm being much more conservative this year.
My husband always complains when I cook holiday meals - I do too much (too many dishes, too many details - you name it) and he always tells me to cut back. So this year I listened - cut out several traditional family side dishes, cooking a turkey breast instead of a whole turkey, ordered pies (cherry & pecan) from a bakery.
So the other night after I did my grocery shopping Joe asks me what we're having for Thanksgiving and I told him. His response - what about the people who like dark meat - don't you think you should do a whole turkey? I like pumpkin bars, we aren't having them this year? Maybe you should cook a small ham too - the kids really like ham.
All I can say - good thing I wasn't armed at the time or he'd be in the hospital right now (I'm assuming I'd be a poor aim).
My menu includes the above plus - garlic mashed potatoes, dressing (as opposed to stuffing - since there's no turkey to stuff), grilled squash, cranberry sauce and a tossed salad. I don't think anyone will go hungry.

We are going camping with my daughter, her new husband, and the granddaughters. I will be making my yearly fried turkey.

Three years ago, my husband and I had just joined the church that his brother and family attended. Volunteers to help with the church's open Thanksgiving Dinner were needed. George and I offered ourselves. George helped with the serving and clean-up. Needing to be in my wheelchair, they assigned me to the door for greeting and welcoming all those who came in.
I was told that many who came were not only unable to afford this meal, such as families and elderly, but that many also lived entirely alone. For some, coming together for this meal was very important to keep their memories of happier times from hurting them.
And it was so true, even on the way in, they seemed so happy to be coming in and going into the big hallway with all the nicely decorated tables and other people, all of whom were savoring the good home-cooked food made by church members.
As greeter I was handing out miniature freshly baked loaves of bread and very nice books about scriptures. I presented each person with them and let them know how glad we were that they came to share their Thanksgiving Day with us!!
If only you could have seen the people who showed every sign of happiness and eagerness to be around other people.
I was told that they always stayed even after they ate, just for the fellowship.
One fellow, sounding like Stevie Wonder, was so happy that he actually serenaded me where I sat, with "You Are So Beautiful" with others standing around and smiling. And I knew what was really so beautiful, so very wonderful at that moment.
Feeling as one with everyone there, seeing them through new eyes as family, welcoming them into the house of the Lord for bread and love and savoring their gladness, was one of the greatest privileges of my life.
HD, when you go to have Thanksgiving at the church, open your eyes to all who are there, for all the rest of their daily lives are often bereft of comfort, companionship, or even enough food.
Imagine being as glad to just be there as they are.
That is Thanksgiving, to me.

Praise the Lord for all the good Christian churches all over this world whose members reach out to nurture and comfort when and how they may, those who need them so.

My husband is working on Thanksgiving.
We are going up to Ithaca to his sister's house. His parents and a friend of the family who is not American is going with us.
We all share in the cooking and baking. Usually whoever's house it is at does the turkey, we all do the rest. I am doing roasted potatoes, a lemon meringue pie, veggie tray and a bread bowl dip thingy. LOL

I'm sorry to hear that. It is so sad when someone close to us dies near a holiday. My father died just after Christmas and it always seems empty without him.God bless.

I think that spending holidays without family members (due to their passing) is the hardest thing about those same holidays. No matter how long it's been - they're always missed. I know for myself, I want the holidays to be like they were when I was growing up - with all my family together. Holidays are the one time I truly miss my childhood and it's because of the absences now.

I'm so sorry for your loss, pgp!
Many restaurants and even some diners have wonderful Thanksgiving dinners you can have at the last minute. As well as local churches.

Pre-made supermarket prime rib thanksgiving dinner. Pretty much just heat and serve. It'll be just our household and a close friend or two. The food may not be as good as we could make ourselves, but it'll be good and it's a lot less work, leaving more time to relax and focus on God stuff.

Since I got the biggest house in the family, I host the get-togethers. We have the usual turkey, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, stuffing, veggie, rolls, cranberry sauce, and gravy to drown everything. I enjoy making the pies so I make pecan, pumpkin and apple. This year my nephew's wife and their new baby boy will be visiting us. My nephew was unable to come due to work, but will make up for that at Christmas. So we're very excited!
