You know, I thought it might be a good idea to try to explain here what IS promoting drug use and what is not. It is sort of a fine line, but let's try to go there.
Before we go, I would like to take a moment and introduce myself so that you sort of know me, what I believe and where I'm coming from. I'm FaithfulWife. I am 46 years old and sort of grew up in the mellow, hippie days--and I was in high school in the 70's when drugs were plentiful and "no big deal." When I was a kid (late high school/early college) I was either drunk or high ALL THE TIME and I've done most of the older drugs like pot and coke and acid. I never did heroine and wasn't much into uppers and downers but I knew of friends who where, you know?
Now telling you about myself and being open and honest about it is NOT promoting drugs, because I'm telling you about me and my background. I'm not encouraging people to actively participate in substance abuse today. In my mind, when I look back on those days, I don't like the person I was because my spare cash went to drugs. My fun was drugs. Everything was "drugs, drugs, drugs"! Furthermore, now that I'm older (and maybe a little wiser
) I can see that doing those substances was partially my way of not feeling some very painful things.
Now, I personally will tell you all that I do not believe that *I* or any government (local, state or federal) should try to legislate morality. I believe that's between a person, their family, and G-d. BUT--at this time the U.S.A. does say that certain things are legal and certain others are illegal. As a Christian I do believe it's my duty to demonstrate a godly life, and since not abusing substances does not break any of God's Laws, I think at the very least I should follow the law of the land. Next, for substances that are LEGAL, the reason we have this forum is to help those who are struggling with ABUSE of substances. Thus, as far as I'm concerned, the substance could be COTTON (which is completely LEGAL and good for you)--but if you are abusing it and eating 3 boxes of cotton a day and now you are suffering physical consequences and want to quit... THIS IS THE FORUM FOR YOU!!
Finally the way I see it, what I believe is not necessarily the rules that I enforce here. My job is not to "enforce FaithfulWife's morality" but rather to interpret the Christian Forums Rules and the Recovery Forum Specific Guidelines as best as I can and enforce THEM! So this is not the FaithfulWife show or any other moderator, but rather trying to do what the owner of CF wants us to do.
Finally and in conclusion, I would like to point out one really important thing. This particular, specific forum is to support people who have or are abusing substances and are trying to quit. Let's say for example that they decided on their own that they want to stop and it's hard. Maybe they are new Christians or maybe they just realized that it was a problem that they need to address. THIS forum is to encourage those who want to quit of their own accord -OR- who have questions. We (Christian Forums) does have other forums where you can discuss whether or not drugs should be illegal, how the U.S.A. should enforce it, what you believe as an individual, etc. The forum for that discussion is the Ethics and Morality forum. That forum is open to any member--Christian or not--and you can debate with others what you think and why. Debate does not mean "attack" but it does mean discuss via logic and try to prove your point.
So I hope that helps to clarify what is and is not "promotion" and if you have any questions you can ask here or send me a PM! Thanks!
