I watched a local fundie Baptist Pastor on TV sunday. I went to a church like this and I've seen this one preach a few times. They always have different sermon titles, but the message is the same.He spent all this time talking about hell. How lost would go there, burned and be tortured forever, just over and over.Then that part at the end "every head bowed, eyes closed...More fear tactics..over and over that someone there could easily walk out and get in a car wreck and die, die for some reason...and wake up being roasted.Course get those to raise there hands. Then that next step...alter call, which I call spiritual rape. Begging and pleading to come down, down go to hell, ect.Just pleading over and over about the tortures of hell.So a few go down and get their "get out of hell free card." Nothing's really changed, just fear won the day. Most really have no clue what happened. Really just like someone holding a gun to your head and telling a person to say "you love me" or I'll shoot.Who on earth wants a relationship where fear is the motive. Yea, some woman who are scared their husbands will kill them, so they stay and take more beatings.....That's what they've reduced Christ too.

Jesus and the Apostles weren't literalists. And they weren't creationists. Believing God is the Creator does not make one a creationist. Jesus did not believe the Earth is only 6,000 years old.

Maybe He did, maybe He didn't. We have no evidence, one way or the other. But since I believe it's much older (personally, I go with the Framework Interpretation variant of OEC), I think you're right - I just can't prove it from Scripture.

Jesus and the Apostles weren't literalists. And they weren't creationists. Believing God is the Creator does not make one a creationist. Jesus did not believe the Earth is only 6,000 years old.

Not all creationists believe that the earth is 6,000 years old. Creationists believe that God created everything in to existance. Here is some sites with the definition of creationism:

Hmmm...allow me to paraphrase statements I've heard in real life over the years from Christians.

• "Dancing is sinful. God says it, I believe it, and that settles it."
• "All music that is non-classical -- including so-called 'Christian Contemporary Music' -- is a tool of the devil. God says it, I believe it, and that settles it."
• "Interracial marriage is a sin. God says it, I believe it, and that settles it."

I could mention many, many more, but these are the silliest. The refusal to allow any doubt, let alone any thought past "God says it, I believe it, and that settles it" allows a lot of extreme nonsense to get by scot-free.

I agree that some people can take the scripture out of context to say right about anything. But when you put these things before the word of God which is sharper than a double edge sword it will cut down the lies and falsehoods that so many people try to put in the bible. For example dancing, nowhere in the bible does it say it is sinful, in fact even David danced before God and no where did it say he sinned (2 Samuel 6:12-16). The bible say's there is indeed a time to dance just an there is a time to mourn (Ecclesiastes 3:4,Psalm 149:3 ). Anyway you can use the bible to cut down all three of those lies. God Bless

I'm not so sure. Jesus took a lot of liberty with the law, doing things like collecting food on the sabbath. He even changed the meaning of major feast days like passover. You know,"this is my body, do this in remembrance of me" He changed the commandments to "love one another" ect...

According to Jeremiah 31:31 and Hebrews 8:8 Jesus did not take liberty with the old law but made a new Covenant (a new law) that was apart of prophecy. In fact Jesus in John 12:49 said "For I did not speak of my own accord, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and how to say it." It is essential to understand that Jesus did not do away with laws, but brought to completion the laws that already existed. Now we live under a new covenant that we are saved by grace and not works.

The old law was about the physical act, Like you had to physically commit adultery or murder (among others) to sin against God, but in the new covenant it is a condition of your heart. Now if you look at someone to lust in your heart after them you commited adultery (Matthew 5:27-30) or if you hate your brother you commited murder (Matthew 5:21-26). Anyway as you read the bible you can see that Jesus was not taking liberty with the old law, but fulfilling it.

Through out the bible you not only see Jesus literally fufilling prophecy that was fortold in scripture but also taking the scripture very literal (Mark 14:49,Luke 24:27,John 19:36). God Bless brother

Homosexuality is not a sin, contrary to the popular lies that are spread about it. Homosexuality also doesn't ruin anyone's lives in the sense you're referring to.

Both the old and new testament lable it as a sin. Everyone can try to "reinterpret" what the bible say's on the matter, but the fact is the bible which is God's word to man condemns the act of homosexuality among other sins (1 Corinthians 6:9-10, Romans 1:24-27,Jude 1:7). The sin of homosexuality is not a greater sin then another, just because people talk about it more does not make this any sort of unspeakable sin. God Bless

The "Christian" right in general seems to be continually moving to more extremism. Book burnings in Wisconsin, the anti Islam hate (I've heard more than one say all Muslims should be killed), the anti immigrant stance in which some have turned to advocating violence against Mexicans. The list could go on. The more the republican party associates itself with Christianity the more extremist Christianity seems to become.

As for Jesus and the apostles, clearly they were not literalists in their interpretation of the laws and traditions of the Jewish faith.

There are extremist in both parties. I have noticed that many in the liberal forum loves poking at the christian right as being extremist yet ignoring the christian left extremist in their own party. The same goes for the christian right ignoring the extremist in their party. Anyway I think enough is enough with the fingre pointing at whos party is extremist when both parties have their share of wackos. God Bless

If your solely interested in watching two christians tear each other down because you get a kick out of it, then I ask you to check your motives. Because it's ungodly to want to watch two brothers tear each other down and bring division in the body of Christ over something that really does not matter (1 Corinthians 12:25-26). Also I never claimed I knew it all (or I solely know the truth) as you claim. But I do study the bible alot as a youth specialist to better help people in need. It's becoming clear that you might not have a great quit time with God or you are not actively chasing the things of God. I do not say any of this to be hurtful or hateful, but you are showing signs of lack of growth. A few things you can do to grow more are: have quit times where it's just you and God, read the bible daily, read books by christian authers or listen to sermons online and fasting as you see fit (not only from food but also from the messages of the media).

I know God has big plans for you life and I hope nothing but the best for you. I just ask you check your motives behind your post and ask are you really building people up and teaching what the bible says or are you just trying to get a kick at tearing people down. Anyway have a blessed day!!!

I think extremism can go both ways (conservative and liberal). I've seen my share of extremist liberals who are frankly no better than the extreme-fundamentalists they seem to loathe so dearly.

Some liberals become so extreme that in their attempt to be free of everything, they actually bind themselves to a fairly rigid set of things. Liberal to the point of almost violent exclusion... seems like an oxymoron, but it happens.

What is an "Extremist anything" then? In my book, just someone who is militant about the things they expect and accept in others (rather than themselves). This could manifest in a variety of ways.
