Why are they called Spaghetti Westerns?

What is a Spaghetti Western?

According to what I think I have seen, myself, and read > a Spaghetti Western is an Italian film. The settings can pretend to be in the American West, but might be shot in more desert-like and hilly areas of Spain, and maybe in Yugoslavia or somewhere around there.

One issue I have with them is they can get pretty bloody and with a lot of killing, much more than a lot of average American westerns. Plus, the abuse of women in some cases can be pretty bad. But, of course, abuse of women does occur even in earlier American westerns, but possibly is not as graphic as in certain but not all Italian westerns.

But the Italian films can have twists and ironies of how things go, to no end.

So, they are not smooth like a string of spaghetti.

Maybe I could say an American western can tend to have more personality development and conflict with even a need for a moral or philosophical choice to make, while in a Spaghetti Western conflicts may moreso tend to be resolved by violence and who is the most skilled with a gun . . . and/or other methods.

Some of these peculiar pasta predicaments produced hollywood heroes. In others you had to use your noodle to figure things out all in all there were americans instantly learning Italian in an instant..... That is one powerful meat-a ball.

I realized that is true while watching Dirty Harry recently. Kinda like Tom Cruise. They don't seem to possess the range of higher caliber actors. Likely why they haven't won Oscars for acting. I love some of Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns. Especially those with Eastwood and his nemesis Gian Maria Volonte. Those Fistful of Dollar movies are entertaining.

Back in the days I think unknown actors would go to Italy and star in films where they had no unions a film could be made dirt cheap. I think most films were made for showing in Italy and the voices of actors that didn't speak Italian were dubbed. I'm not sure but I think some of the lower budget westerns the actors that didn't speak Italian had to dub their own voice back in for American release. I sort of got into reading about them for awhile trying to collect movies of the sub genre. My movie budget ran out before I could get deeply into it I only have the Clint Eastwood classics the big 3 by Sergio Leone so far I tend to not invest in movies that don't have at least an English Dub as I don't enjoy having to constantly read subs even now I have a decent size tv.

Most the westerns made in the 60's were spaghetti westerns... Just watch an old Eastwood western like Fistful of Dollars and you're there.

Another interesting thing: I've been around a long time, and have eaten a lot of it, but I still forget how to spell spaghetti.

P.S. Even though it's a spoof of spaghetti westerns, They Call Me Trinity is the all-time best spaghetti western.

Actually it was usually Terence Stamp. They both have the same range of facial expressions.
