  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How about this? A sort of operational definition:

A person is an individual who should receive the deference and benefits commonly given to members of human society.

Hm... that only seems to move the question one step back, without answering it - how do you then determine who /should/ receive the deference and benefits?

Here's a pithy reformulation - whaddaya think?

"Who should have human rights? Anyone that can ask for 'em."

How about the computer program:
print "I want human rights."
?

How about this:
"Who should have human rights? Anyone that asks for them and recognizes when it isn't granted them."

I like a taxonomic definition also. Even though it's purely academic, I'd consider other members of our genus as persons. So if a living Homo neanderthalensis, or Homo habilis should ever be found, they'd also be considered persons. But other hominids, like the Australopithecines, would not be persons. Sure, it's purely arbitrary, but why not?
Indeed. It's simply a concept utilised for the purposes of clarification, but it ends up being even more confusing with endless philosophical ramifications that mean nothing at all, really. Personally, however, I think that humans should have the same rights as any other animal. Being a 'person' is irrelevant to the overall value of the life in question.
