What I'm Reading -- How About You?

I've been doing a long study of Calvin's Institutes and The Godly Man's Picture by Thomas Watson.

Also reading a short history of the French Religious Wars of 1562-98 between the Huguenots and Romanists.

Just finished A Secular Faith: Why Christianity Favors the Separation of Church and State by D.G. Hart which is excellent.

I don't read very fast, in fact I read at about the pace of a crippled turtle, but I do try to read when ever I have spare time. These days I'm reading a number of things. My latest read was John Nevin's 1840's book, A Mystical Presence: A Vindication of the Reformed or Calvinistic Doctrine of the Holy Eucharist. I found this to be a very telling and exciting book. I found Charles Hodges review on the book and I've printed it out and hope to read it soon.

I'm meandering my way through a new biography about Mormon founder Joseph Smith. The books is Joseph Smith: Rough Stone Rollingby historian Richard Bushman. Bushman is a well respected historian and a Mormon.

I'v also started reading the writings of Pope Gregory the Great. These writings are in the Second Series of the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers volume XII. I've read the editor's Prolegomena and I'm now reading Gregory's The Book of Pastoral Rule.When I finish this I plan to continue reading Pope Gregory's letters.

I'm presently reading Augustine's, "City of God" for the 5th time and John Gill's expository work on the Scriptures, and of course, God's Holy Word.

Outside my reading for school, I'm slowly trudging through Meredith Kline's Kingdom Prologue.

I'm working through Essentials of New Testament Greek by Summers and Sawyer with a study group at church. Also, we've been scanning the writings of the Early Church Fathers in our Wednesday night historical theology study.

not sure why - but I'm reading very little of late

may be spending too much time here

may be spending too much time on work related stuff

most likely - nothings really appealing to me right now - I start a book and am finding that I have trouble getting interested in the book (which is quite a rarity for me)

whatever the reason - I don't love my current reading attitude because books have always been one of dearest pasttimes

Reading through Tozer, Knowledge of the Holy with three college students.

Knowledge of the Holy is certainly one of my all time faves! Tozer was definitely a committed christian devotional writer! Whatever he wrote was great reading! Those college students are blest to be going through that book with a seasoned guide!

i"m currently reading the Epistles of Gregory the Great (Pope from 590-604) in volume XII of the Nicene and Post Nicene Fathers (Second Series) and I just started a biography of Philip Melancthon

Guess what... John Murray is my great uncle. My mom's sister married his son. Crazy huh?

That's cool! I had started Jonah Goldberg's "Liberal Facism" but I have been making costumes for my daughter's ballet company and the new meds I have been taking have left me with very little concentration so I am going to restart that one.

Also in the hopper are two new "girly" books one by Carolyn Mahaney (the title is something like, "Shopping for Time") and one by Nancy Wilson (title is something like, "Building Her House). Too lazy to get up and get them out of my bag.

Cool. Murray was a bachelor for many years. Still remember his portrait hanging at Westminister. And the book Redemption Accomplished and Applied is a classic!

A great book which interprets that Greek Mythology is really just the Genesis account but from a pagan Greek's viewpoint.

I read a copy of Liberal Fascism from the library. I loved it. The only problem is that I wanted to check it out again and go over some parts of it again...but it's been constantly checked out by others ever since!! And since it's such a popular book, our library won't allow anybody to place a 'hold' on it.

I have always had this problem of reading too many books at once and it takes me forever to finish them.

I'm very sorry to say I haven't read much of anything recently (not even a novel). For as long as I can remember I've juggled 3-4 books at a time, generally completing at least 2 books/week. The past 6 months or so I don't think I've read much at all - for some reason I just haven't been able to get really interested in anything, neither have I been able to really concentrate on them.

It's a perplexion.
