  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This article has nothing to do with evolution/creation, but what do you think about this line from the article.
Last year, the biggest eruption scientists had ever seen -- a tongue of flame stretching hundreds of millions of miles -- could have wreaked all kinds of havoc on Earth, had it been directed toward a sensitive area.
What do they mean by "sensitive area"? could we be burnt to a crisp if this happened? could this cause an mass extinction event?

I don't know exactly what they mean by sensitive area, but I do know that solar flares like that can knock out communications, etc. I remember about ten years ago, all wireless communications on the east coast got knocked out by a solar flare. No cell phones or pagers would work for about six hours. Back then, not that many people had wireless, so it caused a big problem, but not a life-changing problem like it would today. Now just about everything is wireless at some point along the way, and even medical equipment has components that could be affected by a bad flare.

I don't think it could cause a mass-extinction, except perhaps of radiation-sensitive species, none of which I can name. It's like a big storm of radio waves and radio particulates more than anything.

That was my entire problem with the article. When I see the words "tongue of flame" I am understanding that to mean the solar equivalent to "fire" i.e. a flare of superhot gas that is 100 millions of miles long...
