  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I've been doing a lot of reflecting on my recent attitude and feelings toward my Christian walk and something very worrying occurred to me. I've found that my main motivation for doing anything that I do (praying, going to church, staying clear of temptation) is fueled by my fear of eternal damnation.

I don't know if anyone else goes through this, but it is scary. What if I am Christian mainly because I'm scared to go to hell?

Thanks for your honesty, and I can say I wondered about this often in my own life, so thanks for prompting me to do some study.

Classical Theology says their are two kinds of fear. One has to with punishment for sin, the other has to do with a fear of sin as sin. One is called timor servilis - a servile fear, the other is known as a timor filialis - or 'filial' fear. according to Josef Pieper who I am drawing this from, 'servile' fear is an imperfect fear of the Lord. It has its source - 'all fear is born of love'; fear is 'love in flight' - in an imperfect form of 'concupiscent' love of God. The timor servilis fears above all the loss of personal fulfilment in eternal life - in other words, eternal damnation. Therein lies the nature and substance of 'servile' fear. Although it is something imperfect, this substance of servile fear, namely, the fear of eternal punishment, is nevertheless 'good'; indeed it is 'from the Holy Spirit'. It can pave the way for a true love of God (caritas); and it is the 'beginning of wisdom (Ps 111:10), for it disposes the soul for wisdom....The 'servile' fear of damnation decreases as man's nature is the more deeply penetrated by his love of friendship with God...'Filial' fear, which iis ordered to the perfect love of God, is numbered among the gifts of the Holy Spirit. It is a gift that entirely surpasses the potentialities of natural man.

If that's any help you want to read more its from Josef Pieper's book On Hope.

I don't know what your church teaches, do they preach about hell a lot, do they use that to motivate church members?

So you are the Final Arbiter of what is and isn't God's truth? Your common sense determines what is truly from God and what isn't? If so, how are you not, then, putting yourself above God? How do you avoid conforming God's truth to your standards, to your own moral preferences and particular life philosophy and so making His truth merely a reflection of you?
If God wrote the Bible then you would have a point. The people who tried to kill the Son of God wrote and rewrote the scriptures.

As for common sence, I knew when I was a child that the flood story was just silly!

If God is God, then God decides what is right and what is good, not you or I. You don't believe and you don't have a relationship with who you claim--the God talked about in the Bible--because if you did, you couldn't write off anything He says.

I surrendered my need for control when God woke me up. Clearly, he hasn't done the same for you--so you insist on controlling your god.

The fact that two people--using human logic--can't agree on Scriptures means nothing. It just means human logic and understanding is not equal to God's wisdom. God's Word is not only inspired, but God's Word is living and active. And, that was God's call and promise--as is God's promise that His Word will never return void, but will accomplish all He sent The Word forth to do.

If God wrote the Bible then you would have a point, but he didn't. The bible books are as imperfect as we should expect them to be. The imperfection of the books don't bother my faith in the Living God.

Wow. You are so deceived. Do you actually claim to have a personal relationship with the God described in the Christian Scriptures and yet reject His very Word? You don't have to be scared of hell. Being scared of hell or not, even believing in hell or not, won't change where anyone ends up.
The idea that an infinate being who is Love, allows his created finite children to be deceived by a Satan creature, but then tortures them for an eternity, would be a sadistic monster, not any sort of Loving deity!

If the Bible is as untrustworthy as you say, so terribly corrupted by human influence, why are you willing to adopt anything from its contents as true? And how do you not end up just making God in your own image when you make yourself the Final Arbiter of what the truth is about Him?

The Flood is a divine parlor trick compared to the creation of the universe ex nihilo. What seems silly to me is to reject the former while accepting the latter.

I belive that the OT bible books are a reflection of the times and thinking of those who created them. They get better from the older to the newer.

The flood was an attempt to cover up the fact that the Hebrew authors couldn't trace their bloodlines back to the Adam that they appropriated from Mesipotamian lore. So they decided to just drown the whole world in its wickedness.

How do you know this? How do the books "get better"? According to who and what criteria?

I think if you are living your Christian life out of fear, then you need to come closer to Jesus, really know his heart and his love. When you know in your heart that Jesus loves you and that you are his friend, you will live more in love and much less in fear.

It seems that religion has overtaken the majority of true believers! Like: Which Denomination does one belong to determines in a lot of ways what one believes. Hence there is religion. Reading the Bible scriptures as a certain denominational view affects one belief. So why not get Denominations doctrines out of the way and simply follow in correctness, led by The Spirit of God.
This One favors no denomination, I favor deep study with prayer for guidance, believing it will be given. Did not Jesus say: Ask and it shall be given unto you? One can ask and one can ask without belief.
An interesting thing about the word denominations is: Demons Set On Men. The way ones denominations think is the way the ones setting under them think. Is God divided with Himself? Was Jesus teachings of what God said divided into what He thought? What about the ME? The Me gets in the way many times by the surrounding conditions of this world.
Bottom line to my way of thinking is: You beleave there is a Creator or you don't. Get rid of religion and look around you at the things created to see God!
All thing created were created with a mathematical formula! That in itself should prove One with eminence ability.
I suggest that many of the so-called Christian read the Book of Urantia if they desire a wake up call.

What you say just doesn't float. Going to church just because your scared of going to hell. Not because you love God and jesus and want to praise them. Everybody is scared to go to hell. Even a Satanist could have a moment like that. Just because you go to a church because of that doesn't make you a Christian if you dont really believe or endorse why it's there.
I think that if you go just for that reaso, then you get less and less scared and then completely forget about it cause your not scared anymore. A church is not made just to be a cushion for someone scared little butt. It is made to be a light in darkness and a sword to cut down the evils that try to destroy our lives. Christianity isn't a religion. It is a relationship. If you enter God's house just because your scared and need comfort for a few minutes, but don't intend to leave with God's message imprinted on your mind, body, and soul, it is pointless and not going to be eventful in any necessary way.
It is our live of god that makes church what it js, not out free of another realm that we can avoid altogether by trike accepting jeses into our soul, rather than going to church for a few minutes of peace. If you truly accept Christ then you shouldn't fear, because he will lead you into the right path.

angel dude:

I must disagree with what you are saying Zoidar. Going to church has nothing to do with spiritual salvation of ones soul. Church is a man made thing. The One and only true church is The Body of Christ; and it has nothing to do with man and their church buildings!
When one reads the writings of the apostle Paul, who was the one sent by Jesus Christ to preach to the Gentiles, they begin, with the help of the Holy Spirit to see the truth of what spiritual salvation is.
Jesus talked of going into your closet and praying to the Father in secret and that one would be rewarded with help. The closet being the inner mind of a person. Otherwise, go in privacy and pray with believing that help will come. and it will.
God does not need man's church building to bring His Elect into spiritual salvation! Thinking that churches are the answer is what has caused so many to day to be spiritually lost without even knowing it.
This may sound harsh to many, but nontheless it is true. Read what the apostel Paul teaches about man's false ways.

Seems like you have not studies the writings of the Bible. The Flood you say in a cover up. Well if you really feel that way, then so be it unto you. However, God does not use tricks, He uses fact! That is why He is God. However, I will not spend time here talking to one that has sorted out all the falseness contained in the Bible scriptures.

The Bible says that fear of hell is the beguine of wisdom.

Now hopefully that fear turns to love, but the Bible also says that mankind should fear the one who can. Throw your body and soul in hell.

That faith can be built upon.

I don't mean to be rude, but you have missed entirely the meaning of my words concerning the Flood. I was NOT suggesting the Great Flood was a "cover up," or even that it was an actual parlor trick. I said only that IN COMPARISON to the act of Creation, the Flood looks like a parlor trick. My point was about scale, not that the Flood never happened.

So, maybe back off a bit in your antagonism toward me and actually comprehend what I'm writing before you go on the attack.

In Catholic theology what you feel is what we describe as imperfect love for God.
Though it's imperfect it's still a desire to follow the Lord, it's a recognition of his power and sovereignty.
It's fuled by fear rather than love.

Many people feel this way their whole life and they belong to Christ even though they don't know him as well as they'e been called to do.

Perfect love for God is based upon a sincere and deepfelt desire to know him, seek him and grow closer to him out of a immense feeling of love.
This is longing for ones creator and savior.

At this point you're so very thirsty for him. He is you origin, your purpose and life.
This is perfect cause this is the true painting of God for our eyes made possible by the Holy Spirit.

Watch this video and it will help you follow Jesus for all the right reasons.

Thank you so much for this video; it was such a blessing and just what I needed. I’ve been feeling numb all day, having intrusive thoughts, doubting myself, worrying about my eternal fate. Right now I’m sobbing and just want Jesus to use me and mold me however He sees fit.

I’ve messed up so much, even after claiming for years to be a “Christian”; I engaged in a life of willful sin for so long and I’ve spent the last week in paralyzing fear that there’s no forgiveness left for someone like me (bc of certain Bible verses that I’m probably misinterpreting). All I know right now is all I can do is live my life for Him and see what happens; even if I’m doomed maybe He can still use me to reach others. Thank you again, so so much. God bless.

"I've found that my main motivation for doing anything that I do (praying, going to church, staying clear of temptation) is fueled by my fear of eternal damnation... What if I am Christian mainly because I'm scared to go to hell?

Two things. First examine yourself in accordance with all the scriptures that pertain to the topic of salvation as an ongoing practice.

2Co 13:5 Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you--unless indeed you fail the test?

And examine everyone else according to the fullness of what the word of God says on the same topic.
'
2Co 13:6 But I trust that you will realize that we ourselves do not fail the test.

No, don't examine yourself or others according to your belief groups standards or those in your local church, as everyone always passes the standards their own group establishes.

2Co 10:12 For we are not bold to class or compare ourselves with some of those who commend themselves; but when they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are without understanding.

Did Paul really intend for us to be habitually judging both ourselves AND OTHERS, as to whether or not they were really true Christians? He did.

2Co 11:13 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14 No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, whose end will be according to their deeds.

Second, understand that one of the characteristics of the religious lost is an unshakeable, unquestionable belief that their views are the correct ones. It's a universal characteristic of those who believe lies are truth and truth to be lies. Here's a summary of my findings from scripture.

Part One: How to Believe Lies “as” Truth (One Page) Excerpt from my book, Galaxy Lord Discovery:

“I said, "If you think about it, that’s pretty much that’s the normal way things progress when two people from different belief groups share their beliefs. What do we share?

1.) We share the proof we have that verifies our views are the correct ones. What else do we share?

2.) We share all the evidence we have that shows the other person’s views are off.

3.) How do we interpret everything? Well, in the light of what we know is truth, of course. What is truth? Our beliefs. All correct interpretations of all “valid” data must support, or at least not negate, our infallible beliefs.

4.) What do we keep jumping back to when our beliefs are questioned? Everything I just listed.

No matter what our belief group, or beliefs, we all share the data we know “verifies our beliefs” and proves all “opposing beliefs” false.

And the interpretations, of the data we have selected, are always in line with what each person knows is truth, and of course, no matter what our beliefs, no matter who we are, our core beliefs “are” “truth”.

Ergo … All correct interpretations of valid data must align with our beliefs. But there is more.

5. Anything that doesn’t seem to fit with our views, we reinterpret, ignore, discredit, invalidate …

6. Then we usually have a few outside reasons for why we are in the belief groups we are in. Things like, we got a burning in the bosom, we speak in tongues, signs, wonders, we prayed to God for the truth on an issue and got “feelings” or some other characteristics of our belief group that prove “ours” is the correct one. This also includes things like: our group is the oldest, largest, fastest growing, wealthiest, … our group has the most experts with doctorates …”

I call #1-6 above “Methodology One”: The Methodology of Belief Groups)

Any unquestionably true beliefs indicate the use of Methodology One above. The non-religious lost: Rom. 1:18-32. The religious but non-Christian: Rom. 10:1-3, Those that believe themselves to be Christians but aren’t: Mat. 7. Look at their responses to those who don’t agree with their beliefs in Mat. 7:6 Why? Look at what they have gathered using the Methodology above. And no one using it can get to truth, EVER. God didn’t design it for that.

2Th 2:10 and with all the deception of wickedness for those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth so as to be saved. 11 For this reason God will send upon them a deluding influence so that they will believe what is false, 12 in order that they all may be judged who did not believe the truth, but took pleasure in wickedness.”

If you use the exact same Methodology you get the exact same result: An unquestionable assurance that your beliefs are Fact. If you want truth, you have to do the opposite of that Methodology: The next one.

Part 2: How to Get to Truth “Methodology Two” (Two Pages)

2Pe 3:16 as also in all his letters, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction.

“That which we love least is always forced to conform to that which we love most. You can love your belief or truth. Pick one.”

If your belief are “unquestionable truths”. We both know what you love and which methodology you will use. It’s on the previous sheet. But if your Methodology can’t get you “to” the truth does it matter how vehemently you hold to your beliefs.

Rules for Getting to Truth

1.) We must avoid “Methodology One” (Previous page): That Methodology only hardens, those that use it, into believing whatever lies they “want to believe” “as” truth. That Methodology is “Proving your beliefs true and holding fast to them.” On this sheet you have the “opposite” Methodology, i.e. what is required if we want to alter all our beliefs to fit truth.

2.) We must remain open minded to altering any or all of our beliefs in the light of the fullness of the truth, when everything that “Might” pertain to the topic at hand, is rightly divided. Unquestionable/Infallible beliefs you will never even consider altering in a million years, prove a love of beliefs, not truth, and thus we have closed our eyes and ears lest we see and hear. If that is the case, we love our beliefs, not truth. (See 2Th. 2:10-15. Everyone gets what they want.)

3.) We, personally, must get absolutely everything anyone thinks might pertain to the topic at hand. Then we must gather all the data that “might pertain” that no group gathered. No belief group gathers what they can’t use to prove their beliefs true or opposing beliefs false. (Do this first and put all passages in bible order. Why? Everyone wants to interpret their “selected” data in the light of their beliefs and in the light of the rest of their “selected” passages.)

4.) Pick a meaning that fully aligns with the historical, legal, architectural, agricultural … context. (Example: In a discussion on “cutting away”, pertaining to grape vines, first understand the first century practices for maintaining vineyards.)

5.) Hold to a meaning for all words, root words, figures of speech parables … consistent throughout the Old and New Testament. We have a Greek Old and New Testament and a Hebrew Old Testament. Pick a meaning that fully fits everywhere the same word, root word, figure of speech is used. (Example: If phobos means fear, terror, shaking in your boots we are all going to die terror in 553 places where the word/root word is used, do not pick the meaning of respect or honor in the 2 places where you do not like the teaching.)

6.) Hold to a meaning consistent with the “entire discussion” surrounding the verse or passage being considered, holding to the flow of thought, flow of arguments, meaning of points made … (Find the beginning and the end of the discussion each passage in question is a part of. Your interpretation must make perfect sense in the light of that entire context.)

7.) Hold only to meanings consistent with conscience. (Example: If your interpretation would be a sin if a man did likewise, and your interpretation results in believing God does it, your interpretation is wrong. i.e. there are no illustrations in the bible where God says He commits adultery. If your “meaning” for the word would make God a violator of His own will or worse, committing adultery, you picked the wrong meaning.)

8.) Pick an interpretation for all the data that makes God, God’s people and God’s word 100% consistent in “all” they say and do and “all” they don’t say and don’t do. “Any inconsistencies are proof of false beliefs/definitions.” (Example: God says He reproves all He loves, and that if there is no reproof you are not His. Ergo, if you believe someone is sinning and God does not reprove them for it either God does not love them or your belief that it is a sin is wrong.)

9.) Pick an interpretation that fully fits with all logic, reason, and rational thinking. (i.e., If the writer spent a whole chapter saying there are no gifts greater than any other, choosing an interpretation for a verse right after that discussion that means “earnestly desire the greater gifts”, contradicts. Look for the “other” possible meaning.)

10.) Interpret the Clearest, Easiest Understood, Most Straightforward … Passages First, Interpreting the Complex, Convoluted, Difficult Passages in their Light. (Difficult passages are easy to distort to fit beliefs.)

11.) Pick a meaning for the parts that fully fits with the whole of the data that might pertain without adding meaning that isn’t there, subtracting meaning that is, or distorting anything to force it to comply with your beliefs. If everything that pertains (#3 above) does not fully fit with everything else (#4) you have the wrong meaning. Hold to a consistency of meaning when we put all of the parts, rightly divided, together. (If 5% of your interpretations don’t fit the other 95% you are either distorting the 5% to hold to your beliefs, or forcing the 95% to fit your views even though they clearly contradict the meaning in the 5%. If you are not open to altering your beliefs to fit truth, you will continue to alter truth to fit your beliefs.)

12.) Keep on continuously proving all things over and over again as a habit and way of life and never stop and hold fast to what is good/true. This process never ends for truth lovers. Why? Just one verse, or one slight change in interpretation can force a complete reevaluation … and a change of beliefs … if you love truth… If not …

Use these pages as a check list to find out which side of the following verses you fall on for each bible topic. Are your eyes and ears closed to considering a different belief might be the truth? Or are all beliefs open to changing in the light of the fullness of the truth rightly divided? Do you use

2Th 2:10-12 and with all the deception of wickedness for those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth so as to be saved. For this reason, God will send upon them a deluding influence so that they will believe what is false, in order that they all may be judged who did not believe the truth, but took pleasure in wickedness.

Everyone gets what they want… from God. You can love your beliefs or truth. Pick one. The “Methodology” you use, and hold fast to, proves, beyond any doubt, what you love.
