My definition of a liberal Christian --- one who is constantly evaluating their faith and where they find themselves standing in life without passing judgment on those who disagree with them.
All I can say is:
AMEN!

So, I am Bishop Spong?

I like that!

I wouldn't say that it is pick and choose Christianity. It is an interpretation of Christianity. As my "piece of scholarship" suggested...the Christian right thinks they have the monopoly on what is good and true. By judging liberals as cafeteria Christians, you only solidify the earlier argument. Most CC's take a minister's interpretation of the Bible and make their own...why shouldn't someone else have their own interpretation of the Bible? Who is a minister? What would make him or her more knowledgeable about the Bible than myself? Not much. My point is that we need to look beyond classification of others in juxtaposition to our ourselves. None of us know if WE are saved, therefore it is a bit too rightous to declare others as damned.

Jesus loves his people...and so should we.

Oh wait, I almost have a hold on the log in my right eye!

Best,

NJD

Liberal Christians tend to follow the teachings of Jesus, while conservative Christians tend to follow the teachings of Church doctrines in regards to Jesus.
I see this to be true in most cases.

I would consider myself as an evangelical but not a fundamentalist. I don't believe the bible to be infallible, and I lean towards theistic evolution. However, I do believe in the virgin birth, resurrection, miracles and all the rest of it.
I am personally opposed to both extremes. I find it hard to tolerate fundamentalist views that think they have all the right answers in a box. I believe it has done more to turn people away from Christ than the other way round.
Equally I have no time for some liberals who devalue Jesus, turning him into merely a 'good man' who was not God. I also reject universalism which seems to me to me little more than wishful thinking.

Although it is important to try and get our beliefs right, I think (apart from extremes) liberals & conservatives have more in common than it appears and should worship together as one body in Christ.
