Michael - From the Hebrew name מִיכָאֵל (Mikha'el) which meant "who is like God?". This is the name of one of the seven archangels in Hebrew tradition and the only one identified as an archangel in the Bible. In the Book of Revelation in the New Testament he is portrayed as the leader of heaven's armies, and thus is considered the patron saint of soldiers.

Jean - French form of Jehan, the Old French form of Johannes (see JOHN). English form of Iohannes, which was the Latin form of the Greek name Ιωαννης (Ioannes), itself derived from the Hebrew name יוֹחָנָן (Yochanan) meaning "YAHWEH is gracious". This name owes its consistent popularity to two New Testament characters, both highly revered as saints. The first was John the Baptist, the forerunner of Jesus Christ and a victim of beheading by Herod Antipas. The second was the apostle John, also supposedly the author of the fourth Gospel and Revelation.

Elizabeth - God's oath
Shrecengost- (In it's original German spelling) Frighten the guest

So I guess God has promised to frighten his guests.
I think "God's Promise is like a rock" makes more sense. So I guess that works well doesn't it?

Tamara is Hebrew in origin, it means "refreshing".

Kay is Greek and means "rejoice" - but it is derived from Katherine (named after my great-grandmother) which is Greek and means "pure, virginal".

I won't give my last name. But it is German and I don't know what it means.

What's funny about this thread, is if, like me, you're a name meanings buff.... you can figure out a lot of people's names, even if they only give the meaning. ;) ^_^

My first name is Dennis, coming from the name of the greek god Dionysos, god of wine, joy, grapes, fertility and extasy.

You could also argue it somes from the patron saint of Paris, St. Denis, that came to the then-called Lutetia in the 3rd century, but i like the first one better ;)

Actually, it is very likely that my parents were most influenced by a certain american comic strip that also appeared in german newspapers...i even got a collection of the strips for one of my first birthdays. I can only say to my parents: Be careful what you wish for ;)
