Paul was given a "picture mentally" called revelation, of the third heaven and earth which is still future, so that he could endure the tempations of this world and stand faithful all His life to the calling that He was called to do. This picture of the third heaven and earth is what enabled Paul to endure such contradiction against the word and the pressures associated with holding forth the word of life. The third heaven and earth is spoke of in many places in the word, that is where all the christians and those of the old testament called "the just" will live after this earth is reformed and the universe is redone.

the third heaven is the highest heaven where God is.

Heavens are not in layers as in heighth they are in succession as in time. The spiritual realm is interwoven with the physical not somewhere high above.

isn't the greek word cosmos ? what is rendered Heaven ?

When you do a concordance look up on the word heaven in this verse here is what we get:

Greek word: ouranos {oo-ran-os'}

1) the vaulted expanse of the sky with all things visible in it
a) the universe, the world
b) the aerial heavens or sky, the region where the clouds and the tempests gather, and where thunder and lightning are produced
c) the sidereal or starry heavens
2) the region above the sidereal heavens, the seat of order of things eternal and consummately perfect where God dwells and other heavenly beings

Not to confuse the subject, But you need to understand who Paul was writing about in this passage, this will help you into understanding where the third heaven is. Paul is writing on John’s account of when John was caught up and was given the synopsis of the book of Revelation.

"Third heaven" is where God dwells, above the "first heaven" - the daytime sky and above the "second heaven" - space or the nighttime sky, as the ancients saw it. "Third heaven" is also in parallel to the word "paradise" in 2 Cor 12:4:

2 Corinthians 12:2-4 2 I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago (whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows) was caught up to the third heaven. 3 And I know that this man (whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, God knows) 4 was caught up into paradise and heard things too sacred to be put into words, things that a person is not permitted to speak.

God dwells in the heavens yes but this word represents the spiritual real many times not just the physical that you see, many words have dual meaning,s God dwells in the light that no one can approach unto and that is not what we call light it is a spiritual light greater than the intensity of the sun in glory. My whole reason for saying what I said was that Paul was caught up it was a revelation from God and God showed him the future paradise of the third heaven and earth paradise is a place on earth, it's where the old test believers will live after they are ressurected from the dead. This was a great comfort for paul to see and it gave him encouragement to stand faithful and boldly holding forth the word because he dealt with so much pressure he needed this to carry on just like we need encouragement, how would you feel if God showed you what your future would be like, with Him, in eternal life? would not that give you a reason to get more committed to his word and to stand strong against all those who oppose you as you hold forth the word to them? It would me! I know I did not give you biblical evidence but I will soon on this thread I'm in a bit of a hurry, got to go, You are loved of God.

I said 1 Corinthians, which is correct as well.

Paul saw it the third heaven and earth and John saw it also just at different times.

I will post some scripture regarding this soon, it' will be at the least very enlightning and I'm thankful that you know with out a doubt that you have eternal life many have not this confidence in their heart because of a multiplicity of wrong doctrines being tuaght in the denominations today.
