It's partly a matter of customs, but your observation about the apparent lack of tattoos in the NT is probably why many Christians find it helpful to have faith based tattoos which are proven effective in witness.

My wife and I talked to a young lady with the whole of John 3.16 tattooed on her wrist area; it was her favorite verse and mine also; and I'm sure that other conversations have arisen as a result of her willingness to go under the inking needle for something faith based.

Then why not wear cross in a necklace?

Yes. There is something very satisfying about putting a faith-based marking on our body.
A lot of Christians do it, anyway, finding that faith based tattoo designs are an effective conversation-starter in witness conversations.

I think that is better than a tattoo that involves disfiguring God given skin.
Righttruth:

Well, tattoos are not for everyone.

But a lot of Christians do make the conscious decision to do it; and I guess they would not see it as disfigurement; often it's a witness means.

I saw this quote about the sheer numbers of ppl in the Bible Belt that do it:

Around here (Bible Belt), it is common, especially among evangelical Christians, for the girls under about 40 to have religious tattoos. More do than don't, especially when you get to the under 30 crowd. I hardly know any female at church that is under 30 that does not have a tattoo.

It used to be a man thing to do, but it seems like it's become a very womanly thing to do, now, right?

I read this thread then clicked on forums and an ad popped up. For safe tattoo removal :)
Some ppl live to regret their ink. Others certainly don't! (I've lost count of the posts on this forum where the poster says s/he does not regret getting tattooed.)
