  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm not sure I can put this into a poem...

The first man looks to the stars and some faraway hope maybe he despises himself

The second man accepts and embraces who he is, he searches himself for answers, this world contains his hope and his opportunities and this world is so beautiful isn't it?

The third thing has dilemmas like the rest but doesn't seem to have a belief system to quantify or validate who or what they are, they seem to have accepted the storm of chaos that has blown all they know far far away

It seems peculiar that they all have dilemmas

I think you are right about him looking to the stars for hope. To me I put this in a religious context. He is a religious man, but does not have love. He is without hope in his current situation due to making religion a set of rules rather than an expression of hopefulness.

You are far more upbeat about this guy, I see him as a person like the others with out hope. Note he is looking down to the ground, a sign of low self image. The clothes he wares reminds me again of religion, but his religion like the other guy can't help him, he is trapped in low selfesteam.

The third thing has dilemmas like the rest but doesn't seem to have a belief system to quantify or validate who or what they are, they seem to have accepted the storm of chaos that has blown all they know far far away

Yeah I 100% agree with that.

It seems peculiar that they all have dilemmas

Thank you for giving me something really interesting to talk about!

That's interesting, how did you come to the underlined?

Yeah, I have a bias toward looking to the sky for help or to a god. I am more happy with the inner searching approach. I see him as searching himself and searching his surroundings, I don't neccesarily see him as being of low self esteem. When I am deep in thought I will often tilt my head down. It lessens the amount of data coming in through the eyes, allows me to focus better. I see him as religious but more of a Pagan, he has articles that appear to resemble trees or the aspects of earth and he cares about things of this earth that he can craft with his hands. I get the sense that he searches himself and his world, rather than the skies.

Yeah I 100% agree with that.

I see religion as either something living and vibrant, or dead and restrictive, the guy above is clearly not happy with his life so he falls into the second category. Often people who are unhappy with religion follow rules in a restrictive and damaging way.

That is very interesting, and observant, but I think you are right.

Hi Dean,

This is where I meant we could start a bit of a discussion. No one ever comes here. So it will be easier for us not to get lost.

Did you get a chance to have a look at my website at http://www.futureandahope.net I was hoping you would see the reality of God through what he has been doing in me.

No worries, just when you get time. It is a page that I have created to record all the times God has done stuff in my life. To save you reading the whole lot, I will grab a few of my fav stories off it. This is one of the one I like the most. I don't share it to be boastful but rather to prick your interest in the divine.

One morning I got up and walked into the hall and I heard a voice that I believed was God say "How would you like to be stabbed in the Valley". The Valley was known as the rough end of town, and the voice scared me a little, I wondered if I had done something to offend God. I had planned to go down to the Valley to ask people out to church as was my habit at the time. In the end I went anyway regardless of the fear. I walked up to the first person I met and asked him if he would like to go out to church. He said to me "I am an atheist, I don't believe in God". I just said "fine", but hoped to change his mind. He then proceeded to unbutton his shirt and showed me scar marks up and down his chest and stomach. He said to me, "I was attacked by a knife wielding man in the Valley some time ago and spent months recovering in hospital, How could God allow that to happen to me". Then I knew why God had said in the morning "How would I like to be stabbed?". God understood this man, but had a good plan for him. Some weeks latter this man came out to church and became a Christian.

That's an interesting story. As far as it being a real picture of god I can't really say but I honestly don't like the picture that paints in my mind of that god. He seems cruel and self serving, he couldn't or wouldn't protect the man, he just ensured that the man became a servant of god.

Hi Dean,

The thought that comes to mind is there are two players in this story.

A) The perpetrator
B) The victim

A) THE PERPETRATOR - Rightfully you said should not God be able to stop the crime in the first place. The answer I believe is that he tries to. The problem for God is this: When ever a person goes to commit a terrible sin God attempts to use the persons conscience to stop them, as he can speak to me so he will speak to them (in their heart). If the person resists this the only other option is to kill the perpetrator. However the problem for God is this "The person is dying in rebellion, and will end up in hell". God has to weigh up the two options, does he want to send the sinner to hell, or give them a second chance. The fact is God's mercy prevents him from sending the sinner to hell. When he weighs hell against the crime, he allows the crime. Because God wants free will he can't force the perpetrator to do right. Hope that makes sense.

B) THE VICTIM - God comforts the victim

Yeah ... I guess there are other options. What do you think would be some of them?

The issue with why God allows it is probably to show that the perpetrator is truely evil. If God stopped every sin, man could never become truely guilty. If God stopped every evil sin, and only allowed small ones. He would be unjust to send a man to hell for committing a small crime. If the crime is severe the guilt is established. God needs to allow true evil so he can determine how bad a man is.

Say this is a scale:

Anger -> Puching Some one -> Killing with intent

Anger may not be considered enough by God to send a person to hell
Punching also may not be condidered evil enough
But Killing with intent may damn a man to hell, and be the boundary for the identification of true evil. With out grave sins God can't test mans character.

My friend,

Well he could have caused the perpretator to lose his knife or he could have caused a local passerbyer to be able to prevent the crime or he could have miraculously caused the knife to break or he could have sent an angel to stop the man or he could have somehow caused the victim to take a different path that day or he could have caused the man to be caught by the police or god could have given us skin that knifes can't break or he could have given humans hearts that cannot bear the thought of hurting another human. He could have given us a brain that considers violence to be inconcievable. We wouldn't be robots, we just wouldn't like violence, just as we don't like certain smells or tastes or sensations. He could have given us powers that protect us, he could have given us bodies that heal in seconds or that don't die.

I really don't like the idea of a god that allows for horrible things to happen just so he can learn about us, or just so he can justify something even more horrible when preventing it would cause hell to not be neccesary. Jesus seemed to be trying to make hell not neccesary, not a thing that requires evil to exist just so god can be just in the action. Evil not existing and hell not being neccesary is PERFECT.

I have often wondered why hell is necessary. However as a Christian being obedient to God, I just have to accept that that is what God has determined. The fear of hell is actually one method that God uses to prevent crimes, and sins (at least within the believing community), so for that I am thankful.

However as to why did God give us the ability to do evil as well as good, that I do not know. However I believe that it is because God wanted to create a race of beings who were identical to him. Genesis says we were created in "God's Image". If I could experience sadness, I would not create a race of beings to relate to me, who could never experience this emotion. They would have no knowledge of evil. God being able to create both good and evil, wanted beings who could do the same. Yet those beings who choose to use those powers for corruption he punishes. Those who use their abilities for good he rewards.

Also I do believe God limits evil. I have heard stories of divine intervention is crimes, especially among Christians. However as I mentioned before with out the ability to sin we can never be like God. Although I don't believe God ever sins.

Alright, well thanks for being honest in your wondering.

Do you think a people who can sin and destroy and become evil and destroyed for it is like god? Considering the percentage of the human race that god will destroy... do you think he really allowed this just so he could have people like him?

Then how are we like god? We are a people that god claims to sin by our very nature and god is a character said to not be able to sin.

Personally it is my view that God will not destroy the majority of his creation. That is just from my personal experience with God. I see him as very kind and generous in spirit. I could be wrong however, but i have never known him to be filled with wrath. As an example many people in the world think God destroyed all the people in Noah's flood and sent them to hell. Yet the New Testament appears to say Jesus himself went down to the place of the dead and preached to those who died in the flood, giving them a chance of salvation see http://www.futureandahope.net/noah_ark.php for scriptural references, and my take on it. In a similar way just because not the majority of the World are Christian does not mean God can't save them, even on their death beds.

Then how are we like god? We are a people that god claims to sin by our very nature and god is a character said to not be able to sin.

Personally I don't believe this view of man. Only some Christians think we are inately evil. I believe we all need Jesus because we have all sinned but I don't believe God made us sinners, beasts motivated only by sin.

Ignoring the conversation between you and FutureAndAHope, I'll give it a shot.

I think they could represent Three different Beings. Perhaps the first one is a Prophet, looking towards the stars for help. The second being a Holy Being or even a god who will can help the world or destroy it. And the third is Death. Death can come in and take anyone's life as long as they give him a chance. And the Three work together to keep the world going.

...Not my best but unless you want some story, yeahhh...

by the way, Sam is the best character apart from Crowley and Castiel (;
