What does it mean to turn from sin and and self?

Our water baptism is the physical washing away of our old ways and sins and our commitment to follow a new path. The path that Christ has set out for us. In other words, this is the essence of repentance. Repentance is not just admitting our wrongs and asking for forgiveness but it also includes a commitment to God to change our sinful ways as we are able.

We alienate from our adversary, and in doing so we achieve a form of dominion or domination

But, there is a caveat. We do not and can not achieve any kind of domination if we can't perceive we have an enemy to fight and resist. Those who claim to be sinless for example are simply blinded by the evil present within them, which turns many into lying hypocrites

We need the Mercy of God in Christ, even to exist. And that He has given

For thou art my lamp, O Lord: and the Lord will lighten my darkness.

God has commanded the light to shine from the darkness. It does not mean we rid ourselves of the fact of being a sinner. Evil thoughts do still defile us. Mark 7:21-23. We just don't want to be dragged into the messes of darkness any further than that. Sin is a progression from thought to word and ultimately to deed, where it is openly exposed for all to see. We are supposed to catch it early, lest we be overtaken by it.

One cannot please God by trying to stop sin through your own efforts. One must surrender to God's Holy Spirit and allow that Spirit to change our spirit so sin becomes abhorrent to us.

I am just going to focus on the "turning from self" topic.

We are told in scripture that God’s will, which requires self-denial (Luke 9:23), comes into conflict with our will which is enslaved to self-gratification, that is sin (Rom 6:17-20). And because of this conflict, the proper way to approach God according to the Bible , is to submit to God (Jam 4:7) and deny yourself (Luke 9:23, Matt 16:24). This denying yourself is akin to being born again (John 3:3, John 3:7, 1 Peter 1:23) where the old self that we put off (Eph 4:22, Col 3:9) and the new self (Eph 4:24, Col 3:10) is put on.

Sin is breaking God’s law 1 John 3:4 and includes breaking any of the Ten Commandments Rom 7:7 James 2:10-12 written personally by our God of the Universe Exo 31:18

Turning from sin or repentance means a changed heart, a change in our daily walk. God wrote His law in our hearts right where sin begins Heb 8:10 so basically God wants a heart change. Jesus touches on this in Mat 5:19-30 using two commandments from the Ten as an example. Not only does He not want to not to break the least of these commandments He doesn’t even want us to have the thoughts that lead to breaking them and sinning. For example, if our heart is changed and we no longer have contempt for our neighbor but instead those feelings change from anger to love and compassion, thou shalt not murder would automatically be kept. This principles applies to every one of the commandments, keeping the letter is the bare minimum, why He came to magnify His law Isa 42:21 having it near within us. Psa 40:8

Its not something we can do on our own but though Christ Phil 4:13 John 14:15-18 it does require our cooperation.
