Salvation is by believing in and on the person (name) and work of Jesus Christ, it is not based on believing his teaching (word).
Many believe his teaching but do not believe in him.
Those who believe in Christ love him and keep his commandments.
If you do not keep his commandments, then you do not love him, and
if you do not love him, then you are not saved.

What does it mean to believe in a name?

Wouldn't that also include everything the person stands for, therefore His words also?

I think that given the following context:

Given that context I think John 3:18 is better understood in this manner:
Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the word of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.

What are your thoughts?
Jesus came to reveal and reconcile man with God. When we see Jesus, we see God. When we believe in, hope in, and love Jesus, we believe in, hope in, and love God.

"Through Him you believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and glorified Him, and so your faith and hope are in God." 1 Pet 1:21

“This is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.” John 17:3

We do have a NC law--the law of Christ.
We are not under condemnation of any law.
We have the fulfillment of Law living in us, our subordination is to him,
and the Spirit has inspired the written word to reflect the living Word in a way that
protects our direct close communication with God himself while conforming us to his likeness.

Love works no il to his neighbor, therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
Romans 13:10

This is my commandment, that you love one another.
John 15:12

My sheep hear my voice, I know them, and they follow me.
John 10:27

I say unto you that hear, love ....

Yes.

I say unto you that hear, love your enemies and do good to them that hate you.
Luke 6:27

Exodus 23:4-5
If you see your enemies animal going astray you shall surely give it back to him.
If you see one that hates you, struggling with his burden, even if you don't want to help him,
you shall surely help him with it.

If any man loves me, he will keep my words, and my Father will love him
and we will come unto him and make our home with him.
John 14:23-24

The fruit of the Spirit is love ........
And they that belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and lusts.
Galatians 5:23-24
They've done a lot more than that.

But that is not what John 20:30-31 is saying.
"These things are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah,
the Son of God, and that believing you might have life in His name."

John is hoping we will believe that Jesus is the Messiah; the Messenger of the covenant. [ Malachi 3:1 ]

If we believe that Jesus is the Messiah and understand what that means [ Deuteronomy 18:18-19, Acts 3:23 ]
we therefore have to listen to Jesus.

So the good news or gospel contained in John 20:30-31, is to believe that Jesus is your promised Messiah, and yes, listen to him.

If you believe that good news is still for salvation today, that is what you will tell others to believe in.

You agree with that correct?
