I keep most of them, sometimes sell a few. I only throw them away if they are ruined, like from being stored in a damp basement and all mildewed.

If they are any good, I pass them on to friends.
Have you heard of bookcrossing.com? It's where you register books then release them into the wild for a stranger to pick up, register, read, then re-release... Theory is that you can track it around the globe.

Keep them! Old books will be so valuable later! The owners of our apartment left a Bible written in Old Russian and just Russian that was printed in either 1729 or 1829 and one of the guards in our school gave me as a birthday present a book about Greece printed in 1914. I think these books are way too cool!

I keep them.

But, I've also made donations to my local public library, the Goodwill and given a few to friends and family. But, it's rare.

Most are keepers, especially anything non-fiction.

Some I give to the library, some I put in our church library, some I leave in waiting areas

I was doing the bookcrossing thing for awhile but got kind of soured on that. You get a number to put in a book and then leave somewhere, just like where's george, but with books. Well it seemed instead of random chance these people were all arranging bookswaps before dropping thir books of anywhere - what's the point? (For those doing it, more power to you- I think I had 4 "catches" out of 137).
Anyway, it took me a whole bunch of books left here and there before the light came on - I get a DOH there.

I know what you mean (I haven't caught a book in the wild till now) but i really like the idea and as I have far too much books to have them all in my small room :)

But it's true that most books are exchanged at the bookcrossing meet-ups or left at the place the meeting took place at.
