  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

From an Orthodox understanding, what do the following verses mean or teach?

Romans 5: 18 So, then, as through one offence to all men it is to condemnation, so also through one declaration of 'Righteous' it is to all men to justification of life; 19 for as through the disobedience of the one man, the many were constituted sinners: so also through the obedience of the one, shall the many be constituted righteous.

Is this a trick question. Through Adam’s sin we all were condemned. Through Jesus righteous act we were justified..
throgh Adam’s sin we all became sinners, through obedience to Christ we have been made righteous.
Through faith in Christ our sin is remitted (salvation) and we are declared "not guilty" (justification), and
we are accounted righteous with the imputed righteousness of Christ (Ro 5:18-19, 1:17, 3:21, 4:5, Php 3:9), not made inherently righteous, followed by personal sanctification (inherent righteosness) through obedience in the Holy Spirit (Ro 6:16, 19).

For through the offense of the one (Adam), there came condemnation to all men, and in like manner through the one just-requirement or act of righteousness on the Cross (Gr. dikaioma), there came justification of life to all men. Thus, through the one man's disobedience the many were appointed sinners (in that they were condemned to die, and put in the same category as the sinner Adam), and through the obedience of the One Jesus Christ, the many will be appointed righteous (in that they are to be offered forgiveness and life).

Is this a trick question. Through Adam’s sin we all were condemned. Through Jesus righteous act we were justified..
throgh Adam’s sin we all became sinners, through obedience to Christ we have been made righteous. Obedience to repent and come out of our worldly sin and seek a little righteousness of our own by obeying the Ten Commandments..

One man Adam chose, for his children, to be altered by being born dead spiritually…so through the one man, Jesus, all men are able to individually choose to be alive spiritually through his righteousness…

Through faith in Christ our sin is remitted (salvation) and we are declared "not guilty" (justification), and

just because folks don’t always know, but this is the Orthodox subforum, and the OP was asking the Orthodox POV. St Basil’s is only for the Orthodox to answer.

For one, that is a very biased translation, allowing specific ideas unique to the Protestant Reformation to color the text and its meaning.

Those same verses from the EOB New Testament:
"18And so, as through one sin all men were
condemned; likewise through one act of righteousness all men were justified to life. 19Indeed, just as through the one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, likewise, through the obedience of the one, many will be made righteous."

Notice the difference between "declared/constituted" and "made".

The "condemnation" in v. 18 refers to death, as that is the paradigm of Genesis 3, and that is the context that Paul established in v. 12. Adam brought death to all of us, and Christ raises everyone from the dead.
