  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What do the dead know?

I am interested in Scripture particularly, that at least alludes to what happens and what one knows after death.

Do the dead know what's going on in this world?

Is what happens to the dead different now than it was before Christ's resurrection?

Thoughts?

Samuel seemed lucid, but disturbed by Saul & the witch of Endor.
The thief was in Paradise the same day of his death...
makes ya wonder...

I never was entirely sure if that was actually Samuel ... I can't remember now what it was that made me think it seemed a little off. I guess I never wondered this question before.

Why is immortality necessarily good? (hell)
I thought resurrection is one thing, & the immortal body being "glorified" is another. Why did Jesus tell Mary not to touch Him soon (presumably within hours) after His resurrection? (-mostly rhetorical, & admittedly off topic)

I do not believe those who are believers are dead. We are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses. Hebrews 12:1

Well I think the dead in Christ know a lot as per the great cloud of witnesses who surround the living saints. I don't know about the other dead, are they somewhere awaiting judgement or are they already in hell?

All of you who believe something lives on after death, answer this question:

What's good in the sinner that gives him/her immortality?

Immortality is given at the resurrection when we are changed and recreated into God's image.

Yeah, Saint Paul must have lied when he said to be ABSENT from the BODY is to be present with the Lord.

Luke 16:22-31

New International Version (NIV)

22 “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’
25 “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’
27 “He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, 28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’
29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’
30 “‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’
31 “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”

(1) Ah, the great cloud of witnesses, I was not thinking of them, thank you. Being witnesses, that implies they DO see what happens with the living? Opinions?

(2) Samuel being conjured up by Saul

(3) The rich man who died and went to hades - who knew only torment

(4) Absent from the body = present with the Lord (which implies knowledge of Heaven)

(5) I think of the martyrs under the throne in heaven (Revelation) - who seem to know only heaven?

(6) Elijah and Moses who visited Jesus for the Transfiguration - it seems they must be aware of this world if they can visit!

(7) The thief on the cross promised Paradise (we don't know what he knows)

(8) Stephen (while dying) saw Christ in the clouds

Those are all the relevant ones suggested here and that I can think of ...

Any others?

Any thoughts about what they know or experience?

Thank you, everyone, for posts. :)

Another thing to think about, we are a Tri-Part being. We are Body,Soul, and Spirt. Our body is like our shell, our soul is our mind, will an emotions and our Spirit is what goes to God when we die, its immortal. When Stephen was being stoned he said "Lord Jesus, receive my SPIRIT" would that make sense if he just died, knowing nothing? No, he told him to receive his spirit in Heaven, where Stephen went when he died.

When Christ was Transfigured on the mount, you can be sure who He spoke to. They seemed awake enough to talk.
I believe they are more aware than we are and definitely have a few questions answered we are oblivious to.

The dead know absolutely nothing.

This is why God commanded the children of Israel to stop consulting or praying to the dead on behalf the living (Isaiah 8:19). Abraham, Moses, David, Peter etc are all dead as a doornail and patiently wait with all the saints to be raised unto immortality (Daniel 12:2, John 5:28-29). Contrary to popular belief, only Jesus Christ has been raised to live forever (1 Corinthians 15:20-23).

Some people will point that the thief on the cross went to Paradise to be with Christ the day he died, but on close examination of the Scriptures, we see that Jesus was never in Paradise between His death and resurrection (1 Peter 3:18-20). In fact, nobody has been admitted into Paradise as of yet; Paradise (also called New Jerusalem) is our inheritance stored in heaven waiting to be revealed after the day of Judgement. The thief, together with all God's people, will in the Paradise of God after the resurrection of the dead.

Some, like Mama Kidogo, will point out to Jesus transfiguration on the mountain as proof for their belief that the dead are awake. However, that account was merely a vision (Matthew 17:9) designed to show a glimpse of the Kingdom of God (Matthew 16:28), a partial view of the second coming of the Son of God in all His glory (Matthew 24:30). The passage in Mark 9 speaks of Jesus revealing His glory to the disciples, yet it is written in Luke 24 that Christ had to suffer death before entering into His glory. So, how did the disciples witness the Son of God's glory before the appointed time?

Answer: because the transfiguration of Christ was a vision showing a glimpse of the future. Jesus Christ, Moses and Elijah (both in their resurrected bodies) were all in the future speaking about things that were about to occur in the present time.

Revelation 6:9-10: When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the witness they had borne. They cried out with a loud voice, “O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?

Do you take that passage to be literal?

If so, why?
