What do the Conservatives here think of John Macarthur?

I love Pastor John Macarthur's preaching of the Word, it isn't watered down at all, even though at times he makes being Christian sound very tough to live. Its a welcome though as opposed to Prosperity preachers. I also like Charles Stanley.

Don't really know much about him. Got the impression he's pretty "anti-Charismatic," beyond just being "anti-Prosperity-gospel," but not sure. But now that I do have that impression, I tend to be suspicious.

Yeah he does not believe in togues; funny thing is, he knows my Pastor, they met and know each other.

But I love Pastor John Macarthur, I seen him verbally Spar with everyone, Gavin Newsom, Deepak Chopra, Catholic Priests, the Man tells it like it is (the Gospel) and I love him for it. His Ministry(Grace To You) has been a great blessing to me, I have him on Podcast.

My acquaintance with him is pretty much limited to the notes in my MacArthur Study Bible (which, btw, I like very much). He seems to be a solid bible scholar and a good teacher, though he strikes me as a Calvinist-leaning fundamentalist rather than a conservative.

So far I've found three major areas of disagreement with him:

  • YEC - which he insists on, and which I can't buy into at all.
  • Cessationism - totally doesn't work for me, I'm Pentecostal.
  • "Emerging Church" - he's totally opposed and closed-minded on the subject, but I'm a conservative emergent... a category he seems not to recognize is even possible.
I'm sure there'll be more.

I like Charles Stanley better. He's a totally normal Southern Baptist, and a very good teacher.

"Conservative emergent"?? If you believe that, you're not considered Conservative by most Conservatives; I have no respect for the Emergent movement and its false Shephard Brian MaClaren, who believes that preaching Hell is "out of style" LOL.

It was back in 1978 that I picked up John on my radio. I did not agree with him on a couple of issues. It did not take long before I had to admit John was right.

In the 90's John admitted he was wrong on free will. I listen, but it was hard to change my heart on this issue. Since then I have come to agree with John once more.

If you want to hear the best pastor/teacher living to day, then he is still on the radio. His books are simple to read and his tapes are great.

Some people that I have met like to be preached to and not like being taught, which does not even make sense to me. Charles Stanley is a good person, but I would rather listen to his son.

John MacArthur is the best teacher on the bible and I will stake my heart on what he teaches.

John MacArthur has ruffled everyone's feathers, which is why I respect him, he hasn't Compromised like Billy Graham has...

I used to listen to him on our local Christian station~he ruffled feathers; he was dropped some years ago; I figure it flak from the charismatic folks..."Charismatic Chaos" was a popular book of his (i've got it in the attic somewhere...)

Hard to believe it's been 20 years since "The Gospel According to Jesus" came out~that sure caused a ruckus..
Wow, 20 years!
That book changed my life. It was a tough read, but so profound and well worth the effort.

There are a few minor things that I disagree with him on. But I really appreciate his boldness (we don't see enough of it these days in this post modernist world) and transparent desire to serve God in all he does. He is one of the very few teachers today who submits himself to accountability and understands his position as a great responsibility. Overall he is one of the best teachers of our time.

Did you know that he actually learned the scriptures in the same detail as pharisees lean them? THAT is serious study. It's basically memorization of the entire Bible.

All reasons I like him. :D:p

BTW, he has had his ear to the ground regarding post modernism for decades and has been writing about it for that long too. So he hasn't just found the Emergent Church as a new thing to balk against or anything. In his book "The Truth War" he actually includes a portion of a book he wrote long before the EC even existed, but it addressed it in rather frighteningly accurate detail.

Except that it has no one shepherd, true or false. It's a diverse movement, containing diverse views... ranging from McLaren at the liberal end and Mark Driscoll, of Mars Hill Church in Seattle, at the conservative end. Driscoll is mostly a Calvinist-leaning fundamentalist like MacArthur, and he gets all hellfire-and-damnation sometimes. I'm somewhere in between those two, but closer to Driscoll than to McLaren.

And a note on terminology: Driscoll denies being "Emergent" but admits to being "emerging church". His reason for that is to distance himself from people like McLaren. I probably should have made the same distinction, for the same reason.

Well, I did go ahead and buy that MacArthur Study Bible, even knowing I was going to have those disagreements with him and more, and I am pleased with it. I needed an NASB, and a personal-size study Bible, and it's a pretty one. And MacArthur's notes do provide a different, and useful, perspective from all my other study Bibles.

Cool. :D
Yes his research into the context, history, original Greek/Hebrew/Aramaic, etc. is fantastic. So I can understand why you enjoy it even if you don't always agree with him.

There are many Great Pastors that I respect but I don't entirely agree with on every point, all I really care about is Sound Doctrine with the essentials (virgin birth, death, burial, ressurection, trinity, inerrancy of Scripture, etc.) RC Sproul is one of them, but I still enjoy how he brings the Historical context when he preaches the Word.

RC Sproul is one I like. I haven't heard him preach, though I'd love to. I have his Reformation Study Bible, and it's one of my favorites.
