regarding benny hinn:

philippians 1:15 Some indeed preach Christ even from envy and strife, and some also from good will: 16 The former preach Christ from selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my chains; 17 but the latter out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel. 18 What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is preached; and in this I rejoice, yes, and will rejoice.

The church got along fine for hundreds of years without television evangelists. On the other hand, the church got along fine for hundreds of years without sound systems, overhead projectors, printing presses, and personal computers with online bibles. The Lord will use every means and every type of man to deliver the Gospel to all nations. Benny Hinn, who was the subject of this thread, is clearly telling people about Jesus and demonstrating faith in His healing power.

Charismatic believers are more likely to accept Benny Hinn and other popular ministers, because charismatic folks are more likely to have seen God use unusual people to do unusual things. The baptism with the Holy Spirit makes a big difference in a person's perspective. The Lord can use someone to deliver a prophetic word who would be considered an outcast or a "dead weight" in a carnal church. Pastor Benny is more than a little unusual. So is Jesus. So was John the Baptist. Freaks get attention, and God likes to get people's attention. On the other hand, reverence and solemnity has its place. Maybe there's enough room in the church for it all?

An important attitude to avoid is that of the robbed shepherd. A pastor is a shepherd, but he is a hired hand. The owner of the sheep is Jesus, and the owner of the sheep can move them to another pasture with another shepherd any time he feels like it. Some sheep need to eat the grass here, and some sheep need to eat the grass there. When a pastor is jealous to the point of backbiting other shepherds, or televangelists, it might be time to take a step back toward the mirror to get a handle on what the real calling is. Is it to pastor as a hired hand, or to collect sheep in pens so they don't escape? Keep in mind that Christians are not really sheep. Unlike sheep, Christians are worthy of respect as men with their own consciences, free will, and their own callings that we may not recognize.

I think Paul was just grateful that the gospel gets to people even if it has to be at the hands of charlatans. I do not think he is endorsing their behavior or encouraging you to either support or follow them.

Could you please explain your use of the word "charlatan" and who you consider it applies to relevant to this current discussion

I was referring to those the Apostle mentioned in Phil 1.15-18 (see post#81 above).

I think anyone who goes public with their gifts, and accepts money for it is just wrong. I don't care if he heals people or not. Sylvia Brown also claims she has been to Heaven and knows everything about it. I don't see any difference between Sylvia Brown and Benny Hinn. They are both using their gifts to make money, and that is wrong.

I am a big critic of televangelists and generally do not care for them but for some inexplicable reason I like Benny Hinn. Maybe its his funky hairstyle or his 70s Nehru suits, but I like watching him. He can be a real scream sometimes even when he doesn’t mean to be.

I used to watch him and enjoyed the music and the teaching.

After hearing all the attacks..on this board..I taped a show and transcribed his sermon to judge it against the Word.

It was a beautiful presentation of the love of our Father and the salvation offered through His Son, Jesus Christ.

Billy Graham wouldn't have made one red mark on the entire thing...IMO.

And as I sat there, on the couch, eating my cheerios, watching him preach to about 20,000 people, I decided my days of judging him were over.

It would be good if some of his other critics actually watched a show or two as well.

I've watched several of his TV shows over the years and I read "Good Morning Holy Spirit" when it was first published. I've seen the Lord in BH's sermons and that they are prodigious in quality and substance. But.....

I have great difficulty with the showbizzy glitz and hype that accompanies his ministry, the white suits and the enormous chorale, the minders and ushers and the great backdrops which must have cost thousands. I find it a contradiction to honesty and humility when a Christian covers his balding dome with a 'comb-over' or even a toupe.

But then, I also have problems with a certain other high profile ministry in the UK - the unadulteraded splendour of the offices and pastor's quarters in this church unsettled me. The explanation that it is God's church and therefore deserves only the best is, I feel, self-seeking and shallow. I would accept such glorious extravagance in the church itself (maybe) but in the working offices and meeting rooms - hmmmmm, can't quite see that.

As I said - it 'bothers' me!

The difference of opinion regarding BH in this forum in comparison to other forums, specifically the non-denom one is immense. BH was called every name under the sun over there and here, it's interesting that he's widely accepted as okay. I can't understand why some feel so strongly one way and others another. Are we not seeing the same things here? Is it that we P/C's are so willing to accept and believe anyone that has a large, multi-million dollar ministry, holds huge healing crusades and has countless testimonies, many unverified as trustworthy and sincere? I don't have a problem with BH personally, I don't watch his show but I appreciate many do. I guess I just don't understand why some people really hate him and some seem to really love him

Good point!

I don't know much about him. I heard Dateline and a few other news shows did an expose on him and I watched a special on CBC about him. http://www.cbc.ca/fifth/main_miracles.html#resources

I think we should leave the judging to God.

God Bless
