• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I have not been diagnosed bipolar , I am getting an appointment soon and going to print up things so I don't forget what to say.

I am wondering if I was put on medication what is it like? Does it really help?

With anxiety/panic I had to do a lot of self talk things and battling my thoughts, that actually helped a lot - even with medication I still did this. Is that what the Bipolar medication is like?

Will it stabalize your moods? I just don't understand how a pill could really do something to really fix your instability so much, I can't conceive it that the possibility of a medication could really help me get out of my box.

Does anyone have any good results with medication? Please do share what it's done for you I would like to know.

Medications have truly given me my life back! Yes, I still need to do healthy thinking and coping skills, just like anybody else in life. But prior to my meds I was like I was the walking dead and now I am truly Alvie again, not just in Christ, but in my life and ability to have a life.

The RIGHT medication can stabilize mood swings, calm anxiety, slow racing thoughts, etc. But, you can still experience such things, just not to the extreme.

I'll use my own experiences with/without meds for example.

WITHOUT MEDS: My mind races so fast I can't keep up with my own thoughts. I get really quiet, for if I say anything I probably won't make much sense. As well as, it's hard for me to filter what someone is saying for my thoughts are working faster than my comprehension. I get extremely moody; from one minute to the next, and I can't handle a lot of noise. I usually can't stand to be around myself when my mood swings are going nuts. Crowds make me crazy and if I'm closed in with a bunch of people talking at the same time..............I wig! Without the meds, it's a lot harder to try and get myself under control afore I explode. Everything happens so fast and it's hard enough to try and concentrate on what my own mind is thinking, let alone on what other's are saying. Therefore, to find the thoughts to get a hold on myself is usually next to nil.
My highs and lows are more frequent and it becomes really dangerous for me. When I get really high....I do a lot of stupid things that I normally wouldn't do. When I get really low.......I can't hardly get off the couch, let alone do anything productive. (This usually happens afore the rapid cycling)......... When I get really high for a few minutes and then really low the next few minutes...........my mind spirals out of control while my body just sits in one spot. (This is my rapid cycling)

WITH MEDS: My mind may still race a little, but coping skills can usually help get me focused, thus, it only spins for a few minutes. My comprehension is a lot better and I become more sociable. My mood swings may still come and go, but they are fewer and more tolerable.
I still don't like a lot of noise and crowds, but I can handle them a lot better than without meds, and if needed, I just walk out of the room and gather myself for a while.

So, to answer your question: Yes, meds can help. (If you look at the comparison I gave you, you'll notice the WITHOUT MEDS has more detail than the WITH MEDS.) It may take time to feel the effects for some meds take several weeks to get into your system and actually start working. Some, take a little less. Basically, it depends on the person. You may not find the right meds right away. They work differently for different people, so it can get frustrating when trying to find the one or more meds that work for you.
Sometimes, a medication adjustment will have to be made from time to time until you find the right dosage that works for you. In some cases, if the adjustment don't work, the med/meds may have to be changed all together. Once again, this can be really frustrating, but I know in my case, it's better than not having them at all.
As I always tell people who have not been on meds or just starting on them. NEVER QUIT MEDS COLD TURKEY. Always talk to your doc afore quitting meds and he/she can: up/lower the dosage, ween you off them, or replace them with another.

I hope this has helped, at least a little. I know others here have their stories as well, and will give you even better insight to this illness.
Please feel free to pm me anytime.

Boy Medication has helped me big time. It makes me control my anger, and gets my delusional thinking to go away. It took a long time to finally realize no one is trying to hurt me, I thought people were out to get me from 19 to 25 years of age.

I was diagnoised with schizoaffective disorder, most of what I have described of my symptoms are from the thought disorder schizophrenia.

Bipolar is hard for me to know what symptoms I had of that. I remember having racing thoughts, and thinking I was as smart as einstein, and it didn't help my delusion that there was all these students who I went to school with saying I was a genius, it took a long time to finally realize there are people way smarter then me, and it really took me getting my graduate degree to realize it.

With bipolar I know I get anger issues, from work really, but I have learned to stick up for myself and like make angry feelings just go away, by shaking them off when I am hurt or offended, it is not always easy it really isn't.

I am looking for another job now and I hope to find one that is less demanding. Like for instance people don't want you to take your time, they don't want to wait for their food, and I get blamed for when wrapping a snack wrap takes ten seconds instead of seven. You have to see it to believe it.

They don't know one minute is not a long time, thirty seconds is not a long time, and they act like they are about to go to the bathroom, in their pants if you don't give them their food.

Working at Mc Donald's blows my mind, I can't believe they are all running in like panick mode trying to get orders out, and they always want it faster, your fastest is not fast enough.

I can only do my best I can't do better than that, if they got to wait for their food then they have got to wait.

The right combo of meds will definetly help with your thoughts and concentration. Sometimes it takes awhile to find the right combo though. So my advice is be patient and be upfront with your Dr as to how things are going with you.

I have been on meds for 5 years now, it took them 2 years to get the right combo. Although even in that 2 years I could see difference in my thinking and concentration levels. There are some side effects that go with the meds , suchas, loss of short term memory and I am not able to retain what I read. But I glady deal with those to be able to think logically. Not only do I see the difference meds make but my family and friends see it as well. Again I say be patient and don't give up when or if certain meds don't work. If your Dr doesn't want to work with you then find another who will. There is hope!!! God Bless You!!!
