We use sled around this time of the year, pour water down the hill and let it freeze awhile and man we were like Superman:D going so fast down that hill! I loved that as a kid. We also set tangerines with cloves stuck in them all around the house to make it smell nice. Mom,was always baking yummies in the kitchen.
Does anyone remember that colorful moving light that people use to place by their tree to give it color in the room? It looked like a basic fan except it had color on it and you aimed it at the tree and gave it color like rainbows.
I also remember one year when I was about 9 my stupid brother was about 11 or 12,he lied to me and told me Santa had come and I overslept and missed him. He actually took something up on the roof (he went out his window to do this) and made tracks of Santa's boots and the reindeer to get me to believe the little man had actually come to our homne.
Tell me your fun and silly memores of Christmas's of long ago.

Growing up, I was (am) an only child and Christmas was a very big deal in my family. Since both sets of my grandparents lived close by, every year we would go to one grandparents house for a feast, singing, games and opening presents on Christmas Eve, then we'd go and do it all over again the next day at my other grandparents house. Those were the best of times - when my family was one big, happy family. We had so much fun.

I remember one year where the water lines had frozen and it snowed so heavily that we got snowed in at my grandparents' home. We ended up having to get pan-fulls of snow from the back yard (to cook with and to do dishes with) and had to boil it then strain it so we'd have water available. It would sound like hard times, but in reality it was a blast. The most important thing to all of us was that we were safe and that we would make a way together to endure the setbacks.

Then sometimes my grandfather would take me outside in the snow and pull me around on the sled or take me not too far away to the park and we'd go sledding down this really long hill there. Other times we would build a snowman together and dress it up with his old hat, scarf, gloves (on the snowman's twig hands) and use old buttons for his eyes and mouth. (One year my grandpa helped me sneak my uncle's pipe and we stuck that in the snowman's mouth. Of course, my uncle did eventually find it and he wasn't too happy, but we had a good laugh about it anyways.)

I loved everything about Christmas because it meant having my family close by, having fun, eating great food (lots of terrific baked sweets & goodies!) and of course, getting to open Christmas presents!

I particualrly remember the Christmas I got my Merlin game! I was so excited and could not wait to take it to school and show it off! If you had a Merlin you were COOL, man!

Then one year my big brother bought me one of those round saucer-shaped sleds. It was made of metal and was very heavy-duty. He was WAY more excited about that gift than I was! We lived in Minnesota where the road we lived on never thawed until spring. We would go out in the middle of the icy road, and he'd whip that sled around and around in a circle (me on it!) and let it fly up onto the bank of snow that the plow had made. At first it was very scary but he forced me to try to enjoy it. And I really did. I would get really sore muscles the next day after a day of riding the saucer!

Then another Christmas vacation we had a very cold winter storm. I don't remember if it was snowing (probably was not), but the temperature in the air was FIFTY below zero! With that extreme low temperature was also a furious gusty wind. That's the coldest I've ever seen a thermometer go.

My dad and I used to take a long walk in the 1st heavy snow of each winter which was usually around Christmas. We would walk to my Grandmother's house about a mile away and stop in to warm up and visit then walk back home for some hot chocolate. Every Christmas Eve we would go to my Grandmother's house to open presents with the entire family and then everyone would tease me about hearing sleigh bells in the sky and that I was going to miss Santa since it was getting so late. The radio station there would do a Santa tracking and every once in awhile they would come on and say what city he was last seen in. I'd get all anxious as he'd get closer and closer and I was still sitting at my Grandmother's no where close to my bed. Then my grandparents would tell me that they talked to Santa and told him I would be up late so he would make a special trip back just for me.

Wow now I'm homesick.

I always liked Christmas eve. My parents combined the German tradition of decorating the tree on the Christmas Eve with the American tradition of having the whole family take part. My father would light lots of candles around the house and turn off many of the lights. He'd play old classic records of Christmas music sung by people like Bing Crosby, Johnny Mathis, Richard Tucker and Karen Carpenter. He'd sing along and most of kids would join in. We' d all reminisce about different ornaments as we got them out of the boxes and put them on the tree. There were stories behind so many of them. I miss those days....
