What Did St. Nicholas Look Like?

The stump of his jolly ol' pipe he held tight in his teeth; and the smoke went around and around and around his head like a wreath.

He does look fairly similar to the modern day versions

I could recognize him fairly well from icons (though they aren't meant to be realistic depictions and certain things are changed on purpose).

I'm not used to seeing him with such a smile on his face though. Icons aren't normally done with such expression.
