  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What christian songs do you sing and listen to?

Ah, she's very piano-based praise and worship. Gorgeous voice. A lot of artists are working her songs right now. It's hard to pigeonhole her "style". I wouldn't call it folk exactly, but it's more mellow than, say, hmm, can't say at the moment. Having a brain burp. sorry!

Bev, I don't blame you. Naturally, I have more access to American artists like you've got more access to Australian artists.

Sounds like a great singer, will have to see if I can listen to a sample of her music.

Yep, we have many singers from all over the world when it comes to christian songs Wolf. But, I must admit my favorite is Paul Wilbur. And, he's American. Many Aussies push the Aussie singers aside until they haven't the heart to go on and a beautiful voice is lost to the world.

I don't think I've heard of him! What a shame about the situation with the Aussie musicians. What is your music business like in Australia? Do you have major labels, a certain "hotspot" for producers and recording studios to set up shop? (Like over here, the whole Nashville area is like the musical mecca for country, gospel, r&b, and Christian artists. It practically has it's own moon orbiting the place) (oh, sorry, that would be the ghost of Elvis)

I'm still a huge fan of Hillsongs, although I've done my fair share of critiquing some of their techniques. They've got real worldwide appeal. I'm listening to their cd "By Your Side" right now - one of my favorite songs is "My Redeemer Lives" and there's another one on there that is simply heartstopping - It's called "What the Lord Has Done in Me". I would love for our worship team to play that one.

Aussie talent is really popular in America! (I know, I know, Croc Dundee and the ever-amusing Steve Irwin (what is he, crazy with his kid?! He and Michael Jackson ought to have a conversation) aren't the only kinds of Aussies out there. I used to love the band "Midnight Oil" when they were in their heyday, and of course, "Men at Work".

When Aussies talk to me, I literally have to stop what I'm doing and encourage them to KEEP TALKING! *sigh* It's a good thing I'm a happily married Christian lady or I'd be in trouble the next time an Aussie gentleman (or bushwhacker!) opened his mouth around me.

Ok, too much information...

That's only a small percentage of the Aussie talent that gets to America though. The only other really big Aussie music talent I can think of that you didn't mention that became realy popular outside of Australia in my lifetime was AC/DC. There are so many Australian bands (mainly secular) who become popular here, and go do a US tour, but don't become popular because they seem unusual and different to the mainstream stuff.

**pulls out personal tape recorder, presses record and speaks into it** Note to self: Go to America one day and I might find an unhappily unmarried woman that shares wolflily's love of the Aussie accent. **hit stop** ;)

Last week I went to a Jars of Clay Concert that had Roma Waterman as the warm up artist. She's an Aussie girl from Brisbane and to me she had it all over Jars of Clay. If you listen to 103.2 you'll have heard some of her stuff. I think its brilliant. Not exactly worship songs though. I do like Hillsong music though am biased as I attend church there.... well.... I attend church there but I call my home church our local tiny Anglican. I also love some of the old hymns and some of the stuff EMU music puts out. And write my own stuff to sing to the Lord. As much as I can call it my own He inspires it.

I find it hard to pick up the local radio station in Canberra too. My little battery operated radio picks it up, but my CD player I keep in the kitchen doesn't. The batteries ran out in my radio so until I get some more, there's no Christian radio for me. I tend to miss out on a lot of sermons at church, (something to do with being in toddlers church) so I rely on hearing teaching on the Christian radio station. I find it hard to believe my dinky little radio picks it up, but my CD player/radio/cassette player doesn't.

Hey! I forgot all about AC/DC - my sister was a big fan when we were kids. She listened to all that "satanic" (as my dad called it) stuff - Blue Oyster Cult, Led Zep, etc. etc.

I'm kind of surprised Aussie musicians don't make a bigger impression on Americans - we're such a fad-conscious population, you'd think Aussies would be really popular on unique-appeal alone! Unfortunately, it's getting easier and easier for the media to manipulate vast amounts of the American public by the power of tv, which really stinks IMHO. No one wants to take the time to question the garbage that gets shoved down their throats every time they turn on the tv or the radio. Have you gotten a whiff of these barbaric and utterly ridiculous "reality" programs that have become mightily popular over here? They are so stupid. Basically, in a nutshell, the premise is to find entertainment and amusement at someone else's expense. Talk about a quick death to compassion! No wonder kids are getting less respectful and more violent all the time.

Ok, the tangent is officially over!
I think I need a glass of wine.

Yes, the Bachelor makes me squirm. Those poor girls lol. The guy gets all the fun, I am sure he sleeps with most of them, they don't actually say that he does, but they sleep together in the same room, what do you think is going to happen?

I will secretly admit to liking Survivor, although R says it's just as foul. Promoting greed, jealousy and lying.

Yeah, all that mind poison! I had a culture shock recently - my husband loves those old tv sitcoms that are on TV Land (I Love Lucy, all that) He recently bought some cheap Andy Griffiths Show dvd's and we were completely blown away by some of the topics they handled in a very compassionate and sensitive way. not like now! Don't tell ol' what's his face with the mean anti-american posts that I said this, but I really can't stand this place when I really think about it. But it's home, what can I do?

Our church is a broad mix of people, kids right thru to the 70 and 80 y.o. mark... so as you can imagine trying to satisfy the worship styles of various people is hard... we sing a range of music, some of the hymns, some of the pentecostal 60's happy-clappy stuff, and throw into the batch the more modern anthems. We are now also trying to implement our own music, several of us in the music team have written songs and they're slowly making an impact. The modern music unfortunately is very Hillsong influenced - mainly because their church is nearby and so lots of the congregation are exposed to their music, making it easier to teach I suppose. Also many of the band really love their stuff (I'm not too keen, some of it's great but I feel their best is behind them... I'm sorry to say, but that's only my opinion)

My personal taste... songs by Third Day, Passion, Tim Hughes, Matt Redman, Chris Tomlin, Delerious (sort of, kinda missing the mark of late), PC3 (who are sadly expected to be calling it a day this month  ), Michael W Smith and also Jeff Deyo (old SonicFlood)

G'day!

The music at my church is a mix of different writers/sources, but we're really getting into the stuff from Emu Music (Rob Smith, Nicky Chiswell, Phil Percival, etc). If you've heard albums like Consider Christ and You Alone, I'm sure you'll agree that they're full of songs that point to the true message of the Gospel. I'm also a huge fan of hymns that have been given more contemporary tunes.
My personal CD collection includes DC Talk, Newsboys, Delirious?, Jars of Clay just to name a few artists. I also listen to 103.2 whenever I can get the reception clear enough; a good mix of Christian and secular stuff.

Our church is just starting to play songs that one of the younger guys has written. They are so great. Really rocky, which is something that i love. I don't think many of the older people are really fond of them though!!! ;)
They are mainly played at the youth things, i love it, you can really get into the beat and fully go off!!! :D
